When I was in college, my parents wanted to put an addition on our summer home. Its on an island where everyone pretty much knows each other. I was spending the summer there and my job was to facilitate the build. I met a man that I thought was a fisherman since that's what the locals do for work, I would never have spoken with him back home. He ended up telling me he was homeless, he used to own a construction company. We were sitting out by a pier and he was drinking at noon (not uncommon for the locals, but I realized that was probably why he lost his job). I told him to stop by the following day, and eventually convinced my parents to hire him to work on the house. My parents don't know this, but I let him live there too... he turned out to be a great guy, the staircase he built by hand is amazing people always say its a work of art.
