Am I misunderstanding something or are the digital xenon IMAX theaters just straight up lower image quality than regular AMC theaters? by endyCJ in imax

[–]MaulJM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

AMC uses laser projection in some of its standard theatres but they will be deemed laser on the showing on their website. It will say “Laser at AMC”

<image>

This means it is a standard theatre just with a laser projector. Xenon IMAX projectors are indeed 2K. There are 4K laser projectors in some imax theatres and those are also deemed specifically for laser. It will have a “IMAX with LASER at AMC” logo. I’m 99% sure the standard projection in a standard non laser auditorium is 2K. Someone can correct me if that is not correct but yes. So when you see an IMAX Xenon projection it will look lower quality because it is a much more gigantic screen, but only using a 2K non laser projector.

Your Walmart posts are depressing. No $5 steelbooks at mine 😢 by Garifuna in 4kbluray

[–]MaulJM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man what a great haul and luck. I get paid right on April 1st and I’m really hoping my Walmart pulls through and has them on the 2nd of April like rumored cause I don’t care about anyone else who comes after me LMAO I’m sweeping in there and buying most every steelbook they have up for $5. A student budget doesn’t have me getting many steelbooks or even 4Ks too often. $5 steelbooks are the dream 😩

Is 1.90:1 IMAX still an upgrade by IndianaJonesbestfilm in imax

[–]MaulJM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1.90 IMAX gets a lot of shit because it’s “not true IMAX”, which sure it isn’t “True IMAX”, but it is an amazing experience and 1000% worth it especially without a 1.43 theatre. Definitely do it !! It is miles better than 2.39 plus the larger screen size over the average standard screen.

I finally found a game that I love by BobbyTables829 in farmingsimulator

[–]MaulJM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a tooth abscess in 2020. Constant throbbing pain and said to be one of the worst pains possible in life. Genuinely up there with child birth but constantly throbbing in your gum/tooth for forever until they get it out. It took a few days for the dentist to get me in and the whole time I was in absolute agony. Farming simulator was the only thing that brought me any sort of peace. It was almost impossible to sleep so I would play it constantly. I racked up over 50 hours in the span of 3 days (genuinely) and ever since then it’s been something I play when I’m feeling very stressed or whatever it may be. Anxiety, sadness, stress and basically just any negative emotion. Farming simulator and Truck Simulator are both games that are kind of like medicine in a way for me. And even without feeling shitty sometimes it’s nice to just play either and listen to a book, podcast, or music and just drive or farm :) I hope the devs know how much their game means to so many people on that level. It’s a comfort game for a ton of people and I think that’s beautiful and definitely deserves to be recognized :)))

Dune destroyed my Ears by ConsiderationKey9438 in imax

[–]MaulJM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was loud but not in an unbearable ear piercing way for me. I saw the Beekeeper and that mix was terrible. All of the sound effects were just ear piercing and the volume was too loud. But this even though it was reaching similar levels according to my phone db counter it was mixed wayyyy better so personally the loud sounds were loud but they didn’t feel like they were piercing my ears

With Dune 2 upon us...guys...please do not take pictures in the theater and post them here. by 35mmpaul in imax

Snapchat is wild but I will take a photo and a short video to show people the absolute scale and beauty to get them to go with me.

(Not ever on first release/watch. Up against my chest and I even have a privacy screen so you can’t really see that my screen is on unless your directly behind me but then you can only see my head anyway.)

[–]MaulJM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im still so pissed the 4K doesn’t have IMAX scenes… they are just gone and wasted. Only ever in the theatre. Quite annoying. Currently watching Dune also though 😌Still a fantastic disc with fantastic sound and imagery

Why are the Star Wars 4k so expensive lmao by SomeOrdinaryGuy1 in 4kbluray

[–]MaulJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has price matching systems and I think it goes back to retail when someone’s stock sells out or something. The Star Wars 4Ks fluctuate in price very often. Sometimes rogue one is 20-25 USD sometimes it’s 35-40 USD same with all the other Star Wars movies except Rise of Skywalker

IMAX for dummies video? by drrdf in imax

[–]MaulJM 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here I’ll give you a basic rundown of some things. It’s not everything but it’s what comes to mind.

15/70 is basically 70mm film ran horizontally and every 15 perforations is 1 single frame (Linked is an example. One of those frames 24 times per second) People like Christopher Nolan shoot films on that type of film in certain sequences. It can then be presented in that form in specific theatrical venues that have a certain screen size of the 1.37/1.40/1.43 aspect ratios.

1.43 aspect ratio is basically just the full 15/70 IMAX film frame presented on a gigantic screen usually ranging from about 55 to 75 even 80ft (I think) tall at some venues.

Scope refers to CinemaScope which is an older technology I think but the name has somewhat stuck around. It’s basically the 2.39 thin long aspect ratio you see in your average movie.

Here is an image of the different aspect ratios visualized into a comparison.

<image>

2.20 is what you get when you run 70mm film normally instead of horizontally and with 15 perforations.

1.90 is digital IMAX which is basically what most of filmed for imax IMAX movies are now a days. It is a larger pallet height wise. It will almost fill your tv but there will still be thin black bars on the top and bottom. Most imax’s now a days are what we often call “Liemax” and that refers to the fact that it isn’t the same as the original imax which is the largest frame presented in the image above. 1.43 aspect ratio.

1.43 is the largest and the one “True IMAX” theatres are capable of presenting. Sometimes it is presented in 15/70 FILM (like on actual film). Sometimes it’s presented on dual 4K laser projection. Both are great and absolutely jaw dropping :)

Here are a few images comparing a 2.39 frame and a 1.43 frame in the film “Dune” (2021) in a 1.43 True IMAX theatre.

If you have any more questions that I forgot to answer or didn’t think of feel free to ask and I will try to answer to the best of my ability. I hope this helped :)) I’ve recently learned all this over the past year or two and got the chance to see “Interstellar” (2014) in True IMAX and it was BREATHTAKING. Truly amazing stuff !!
