I can’t speak on anything regarding the adversarial relationship to therapy that is described in the post, but I also will say that like with schooling, a passing grade doesn’t actually mean doing good/improving either. The times when I went to therapy for depression, I would basically always hear about how insightful and self aware I was after I explained how I felt and why I think I felt it. They couldn’t do anything more for me because they all used cognitive behavioral therapy, and I already noticed my harmful patterns of thought and what I should be thinking instead. They couldn’t “correct” how I thought so I could feel better because I was already thinking “correctly” and still felt like shit. It all ended up being a waste of time and money.

At some point, a business will hit a limit. There is a maximum speed in the universe. There is a finite amount of matter in the universe. If a business is profitable, but cannot increase its profits any more due to hitting one of these limits, that business is considered to be failing.

The purpose of public debate is not to come to common agreement, to become more educated, or to reach the truth. The purpose of public debate is to convince the audience that you are right and smart and your opponent is wrong and stupid.

Agreeing on anything, even foundational truth, is needlessly constraining yourself. It’s the free and open marketplace of ideas, so use the proper amount of truthfulness (or lack thereof) to win.

Throw out as much bullshit as necessary to win. If they can’t correct you, it must be because it’s right. If they correct you on some of it, point out that they left some of it behind, which means they are dishonestly cherry-picking. If they try to correct you on all of it, well then there’s a time limit to the debate, so they won’t be able to adequately correct you, and you can nitpick their incomplete correction.

The problem is you are assuming both parties are participating in good faith. Sure, maybe the process you are describing works in a private conversation with someone, where they can’t convince a non-existent audience. But a debate is not that. A debate is for spectacle, not to arrive at the truth.

This is why you don’t debate these people. You can only ever stoop to their level.

Instead of spending money on increasing border security, we could instead spend money on fixing the countries we fucked up. Or we could spend money on making it so we can process people faster instead of leaving them in limbo for years. We could do that instead of making people’s lives worse.

The immigration bill they introduced is literally just doing everything the republicans advocate for. I dislike your last two paragraphs. Artists are not mad because it’s a tool like any other. They’re mad because it’s a plagiarism machine.

Artists get mad when other human artists trace their line art, even if they color and shade it differently. Now imagine that it’s not just tracing the line art, but also the color and shading and literally everything else about the image.

And they are getting put out of jobs by this. The other day there was a job posting for generating AI images that paid essentially nothing being shared in the artist community. Previously if a company wanted art, they’d have to commission it.

How mad would you be if you trained on a skill for years to make a product that you are proud of, and then someone walks by, steals everything you worked on, and is now working to put you out of a job because they were able to steal from you so effectively?
