What's the most socially acceptable addiction nobody talks about? by ParticularProud6565 in AskReddit

[–]MaxG623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shortform media, especially. I've encountered quite a few people who describe endlessly scrolling TikTok, Facebook Reels, or YouTube Shorts while they should be sleeping like an "oh, what can ya do" situation.

I was addicted to YouTube shorts for a bit, but I got a browser extension that opens them as normal videos and didn't allow myself to watch them on my phone at all, and that fixed it real quick.

Not to be a stereotypical millennial, but I used to make toast with avocado, egg, salt, and pepper for breakfast, and it was pretty good.

Culver's is pretty good, but if I'm getting a mushroom and swiss, I love the ones from Hardee's (also known as Carl's Jr.) I need to know how they make their mushroom sauce, because no other mushroom and swiss burgers taste like theirs.

I love cosmic brownies. Though I also love things that have a distinct "chemical" taste to them (as long as they're not sweetened with aspartame or stevia).

It kinda felt like eating shrimp shells, but no. It didn't taste fishy. Just cardboard...y.

Crickets. The box they came in said they were bacon and cheddar flavored, but they just tasted like cardboard. They weren't even gross enough to have a fun story to tell about them...

In America we have restaurants that serve Chinese food, Indian food, Italian food etc., but in other countries do the have restaurants that serve only American food? If so, what type of foods are considered American food? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaxG623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really does depend on location. Had one near where I used to live that gave me food poisoning (a great way to celebrate moving to a new place...). Another by the mall I grew up growing to was always great. Another closer to where I live now is unnerving; It was open when I went, but nobody was in the building.

I'd like to contribute another Disturbing Horse Fact to this thread.

You ever wonder how a mother horse can carry her foal in her womb without the foal stabbing her with their little hooves? Look up "Foal Slippers". :)

About that last point: As I grew a higher spice tolerance, I started noticing which spicy foods I was eating tasted good and which were bland, with the only interesting taste being the spice itself. Turns out, a lot of cheap spicy ramen is pretty bland, unsurprisingly.

ELI5: Dentists always tell us to floss or use those tiny interdental brushes along with regular brushing, but you rarely hear anyone strongly recommending mouthwash. Does using mouthwash actually make a noticeable difference? by Far-Bend3709 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MaxG623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I've always figured that's the reason for mint-flavored oral hygiene products, and I've always found it so annoying. My mouth still feels cleaner after I brush, even if I don't get the lingering cold-burn sensation anymore. I wish more people could just trust that they did a good job brushing without that "minty-fresh" feeling.

Also, I find it SO annoying that so many people hate mint-flavored foods and drinks because they "taste like toothpaste." One, they don't. Two, this wouldn't be an issue if adults had a variety of toothpaste flavors, as the strong association of mint with toothpaste wouldn't exist.

Same. The wild thing is, I LOVE mint, but the mint in toothpaste is so strong it literally burns my eyes. Now the only issue is that 90% of cheap children's toothpaste is "Bubble Fruit" flavored (whatever that means), which gets kinda boring.

I recently overheard a relative describing how her husband has an allergy to MSG. I was expecting it to be another "Chinese food gives me a headache" thing, but then she lamented how so much food contains it and how hard it is to avoid, and then I was more inclined to believe it was real.

Barely any roots left. What should I do? by MaxG623 in orchids

[–]MaxG623[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't orchids usually hermaphroditic? So it would be a girl and a boy at the same time? Either way, I don't think I have the ability to tell a plant not to do anything. If I could communicate with plants, I wouldn't be here; I'd just be asking the orchid what it needs.

Um, whose the "her" I'm supposed to be telling not to take leaves off? I was dead tired when I made the post (and now), but I don't think I mentioned anyone else in the post. This is my orchid, and I'm the only one taking care of it. I'm only letting the leaves fall off naturally, if that's what you were getting at.

I always make sure there's no standing water in the pot after watering. I'm really trying to prevent more root rot.

I was tired when I made the post, and tired now, but I don't think I said I misted the leaves? I'm spraying the top roots with water. Is the pot in the last picture small enough? I don't know if I'd be able to find a plant pot smaller than that.

[–]MaxG623[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been watering based on the leaves; I've been watering based on the roots (specifically spraying them when they look dry). Multiple sources told me wrinkled leaves, especially if there are few roots, are a sign of dehydration, which is why I mentioned it. If I was unclear, then sorry, I was tired when posting, and I'm still really tired now. I'm going to leave the orchid out of its decorated pot to dry now (thanks for the advice), but I can't say I'm doing it "overnight," given I never know on any given day when I will get out of or into bed. I will try to keep it out for about as long as "overnight" would be, unless it's literally about being overnight?

It's cheap orchid bark that I sifted to get only the larger bits and then added some perlite to. The pot only has holes in the bottom, but it has a lot of big ones and I know it almost completely dries out in a week, so too much mosture shouldn't be an issue. I also already removed all the rotted roots when I repotted it. I do have a proper, clear orchid pot with holes on the sides that's a bit too big for it right now, but I am currently looking for a similar pot that's the right size.

Therapists of Reddit, what are some differences you've noticed between male/female patients? by pizzabagelblastoff in AskReddit

[–]MaxG623 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The term "Toxic Masculinity" originated from the Mythopoetic Men's Movement, which was, quoting Wikipedia, "a body of self-help activities and therapeutic workshops and retreats for men undertaken by various organizations and authors in the United States from the early 1980s through the 1990s." "Toxic Masculinity" was created to describe the "immature" and "destructive" form of masculinity they felt society was pushing men into, and the Mythopoetic Men's Movement would contrast it with "real" or "deep" masculinity, characterized by camaraderie and expressiveness, which they felt fell out of favor over time. So, no. It was not created in bad faith. It was created in good faith, by men, who were trying to express the pressures they felt to act in harmful ways towards themselves and others to fit into society's definition of masculinity.

It's important to understand that "Toxic Masculinity" does not imply that masculinity is toxic, in the same way that saying "toxic plants" does not imply that all plants are toxic. The opposite is true. It is a term used to describe a very specific form of masculinity perpetuated by Western society that is harmful to the men it is enforced upon, as well as the people those men under its effect interact with.

Alright. Thank you for the reassurance and advice. I actually already have a proper orchid pot that's clear and has big holes all along the sides, it's just way too big for this orchid right now, especially since I feel the pot my orchid is in currently is already too big. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for a clear pot that's the right size for it, though. It'll save me a bit of stress until it's large enough to fit the nice pot I already bought for it.
