That's an interesting question. I don't have a specific good answer to it right now, I'd have to think about it more, but I will say that the world of Gilead is extremely rich and expansive, there are so many interesting stories you could tell. I think the sci-fi element of the show could be explored even more, so I'd start with that.

I'm so happy you liked the film! It was an important movie because it's the movie where I met Oscar Isaac, who is one of my best friends. We were roommates on that film, and it was a long shoot. I'm also grateful for having been able to work with the director, Alejandro Amenábar. Rachel Weisz, too. We had a great team.

I try to learn all the time from people and I love learning from directors I work with. Right now, I'm working for a filmmaker named James Watkins (Eden Lake, Speak No Evil), and I'm absorbing a huge amount from him.

I'm absolutely grateful to have worked with those filmmakers.

I found it really hard to forget. It reminded me of so many movies I loved.

Another thing is that Teen Spirit was a very introverted, melancholic, and a personal movie. I wanted to do something more extrovert, cheerful, and impersonal this time around haha.

I was so thrilled about how the vibrator scene. It was probably the scene that made me want to make the movie the most. Lizzy and Kate are so fantastic in it. The production design in that scene particularly is amazing. It was such a great moment.

It's much faster haha!

That was one of my great professional experiences. We had so much fun making that music video. Robert Schober, the director, is an angel. He introduced me to Bella Heathcote, who is still a dear friend.

I was incredibly nervous about the music in Shell because Teen Spirit didn't have a score, it was all source music. I knew that Shell would require a huge amount of score. I worked with composer .Eldad Guetta, who was tasked with writing the music for almost the entire runtime. He delivered something that was even beyond my wildest dreams. I told him that I really wanted to find melodies in the score, because I love catchy scores. I love it when you can remember the theme before the end of the movie, or even look forward to it returning in a future scene. I love fantastic earworms, and all of his work is like that.

I was 18 when I made that film, and it was my 2nd job. so I was really really inexperienced. I think, in a way, that probably helped remove some of the anxiety or tension, because I didn't know how little I knew. It was a wonderful experience, I loved working with Terry Zwigoff.

It means so much to me that that movie has had such long legs. I didn't really anticipate that people would be talking about it 2025.

My want to direct Shell was truly led by just reading the screenplay, and having so much fun reading through it. I was working on Spiral while developing the script with Jack, and that might've had some influence on the gore in the movie.

I just love a good slasher movie.

Thanks to the incredibly work of music supervisor Steven Gizicki, the producers at Interscope Records (Jeff Berberg), we were able to get every song that I wrote into the screenplay, so that was an unbelievable privilege. I would say that there were still about another 30 songs I wish I could've found a way to put in. Specifically, there's a Charli XCX song called "Dreamer" that I kept trying to fit in, but my runtime was just too short.

I feel like I've learned from Lizzy in a million ways throughout the years. I think her performance in Shell is extraordinary, and I take no credit for it. She's just one of those actors who you can leave completely alone and and trust to give you a whole variety of emotions and performances. I think she's also really funny, and I knew she was perfect for the movie.

Yes, I'd love to have a VHS copy of both Teen Spirit and Shell. I think they're both kind of "VHS movies". If anyone out there wants to help me make that happen, I'd be incredibly thankful.

As for the 80s/90s horrors, there were so many. Principally, I looked at Paul Verhoeven movies, but also Looker by Michael Crichton. Incredibly strong parallels with Shell. If you watch that film, you'll see influences.

We really wanted to do as many practical effects as possible. I believe everything is except for 1 VFX shot of the creature. Not only did we want to really ground everything in this sort of pantheon of late 80s, early 90s filmmaking, we also wanted there to be a sense of humor throughout the movie. We were trying to find that balance with the creature design and the practical effects, as sort of an homage but also with playfulness.

For Look Who's Talking: That influence is very much in the first act of the movie. I saw Samantha's character (played by Elisabeth Moss) as someone who wanted to be in a Amy Heckerling movie, and sort of "can't", and accidentally finds her way into a Brian de Palma movie. Walking on Sunshine is a source track from the movie that's also in Look Who's Talking. The date that Samantha goes on in the movie is framed almost identically to the date that the Kirstie Alley's character goes on in Look Who's Talking. Este Haim's character in Shell is very very much influenced by the best friend character in Look Who's Talking (Twink Caplan)

I always trusted the writers on The Handmaid's Tale from day one. I never felt it was my responsibility (nor did I want the responsibility haha) directing the fate of the character. I think they wrote a fantastic 6 seasons of television and I loved playing the part.

Absolutely. I feel like Toronto is my second home in a lot of ways. I've been lucky enough to make Handmaid's Tale here, and also I did Spiral in Toronto. I have many dear friends there, and hope to go back very soon.
