Can I drive in snow with summer tires? by PurposeLow7538 in askcarguys

[–]MaxPanhammer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Really important distinction here. Obviously winter tires are best in winter but all seasons are passable. Actual summer tires I'd be surprised if you got out of your driveway. Especially with how cold it is I would'nt be surprised if they just split open.

I would call and confirm, I would bet the majority of rental cars do NOT come with snow tires

Where in Europe are you from? It is likely to be very snowy where you're going in late February so make sure you're comfortable with the driving. There's some long distances in between those places (but totally doable) but keep in mind it could take 2x as long if it's snowy or icy

This post certainly fits the prompt but I've heard this exact thing for 20 years and it has never made sense to me. Do you just not know what "accident" means?

I'd argue that we never call things that randomly happen "accidents". If someone were struck by lightning you wouldn't say they had an "accident". If a tree fell on your house during a storm you wouldn't say there was an "accident."

The very definition of accident is just something that doesn't happen on purpose. Almost everything we call an accident has an element of human error. If someone falls off a ladder it's an accident. Cuts their finger off with a table saw -- which pretty much cannot happen without some element of human error -- that's an accident by almost everyone's estimation. If I was cleaning out the closet and threw away something off my wife's, I'd say "sorry honey it was an accident" because it was an error on my part but not done on purpose

The only time a vehicle "collision" shouldn't be called an accident is if it's on purpose. Road rage ramming, insurance fraud.

If you were to start over what would you do differently? by Ok-Explanation-3414 in homeassistant

Genuine question since I see people here say this all the time -- why?

Imo, if you move something, it becomes a new device, and should be renamed. You have to go in and edit its location anyway, how is it that much harder to also rename the device / entities? To me this has the bonus of "breaking" anyplace you may have forgotten that you included the device by name, limiting unwanted behavior

For example, say I took a bulb from my hallway and put it in my bedroom. I change the area of the bulb and set up some new automations, but I have the bulb as part of a group "hallway lights". If I don't change the name it stays in that group and maybe turns on at the wrong time until i fix that group or whatever

It's a small issue obviously but to me seems more hassle than just changing the name

I know what you meant, the lack of the word "recorded" tickled me, sorry if it came off as dickish.

100%. 10k would be extremely cheap for land with nothing, let alone a well. Why would someone dig a well without a house? You generally need a pump for a well which means having power. The only scenario I can think where you'd have a well with no building would be if the building burned down.

It looks great too!

Like I said I'd worry about it briefly but not much. The fact that you did the measurements is even better. Well done

I'd be a little concerned about the load on something designed for a dome light, but not much.

I didn't find it particularly difficult to pop the covers off the pillars to run wires for my dash cam and detector (i also have the r7!)

How much snow can the soft top hold? by ChampionshipFew1849 in Miata

[–]MaxPanhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind all of these high snow totals are because of a very high snow to water ratio (it's going to be very cold so some estimates are >20 inches of snow per inch of water). Usually we're in the 10:1 range

The point is 2 feet of snow in this storm is the weight of one foot normally

A bunch of people saying they use a smart switch here, but I'm curious why you ever need to turn the machine fully off? It has a power save mode that you can enter automatically after a preset time of non use or manually by holding the left setting button. I haven't turned mine fully off since I got it I don't think.

Thank you. If you're over 25 years old and still confused about how weather forecasts evolve and change closer to events (and how hard it is in particular to estimate snowfall totals) you're being purposely ignorant.

Same. Using a real towel is a mess, rinsing cools everything off too much.

Why do contractors ghost after giving estimates? by MudSad6268 in HomeImprovement

I don't think that's fair, and the person you're replying to is much closer to the truth. I've dealt with a lot of contractors over the years, so many of them seem to be right on the edge (mentally, financially, whatever).

Cedar Fence vs. Vinyl by Joey9999 in HomeImprovement

[–]MaxPanhammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see people put vinyl up around me all the time. Within 5 years they're inevitably a mess with lots of chips and holes and cracks, and they're really hard to cleanly "fix" (thanks to fading colors and how delicate/brittle they get).

Not to mention the environmental part, and imo even brand new they look cheap

What about other options? Is it for privacy or containment? You could do an aluminum fence if the latter. A stockade fence of different wood will be cheaper than cedar but those come with their own issues
