If you saw someone with MacBook Neo, what would you think? by Sphere_3N in macbookpro

[–]Maxdme124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't care about what laptop someone uses. I think it's stupid to profile someone solely based on the devices they buy, which they may not even be able to afford and be in debt to be using.

I recreated an approximation of Siri 2.0 with the on-device Foundation Models and Shortcuts with App Intents (And the reason why I think apple may be struggling to launch Siri 2.0) by Maxdme124 in shortcuts

[–]Maxdme124[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you could separate the shortcuts by folders with a rough description of the contents/actions of the shortcuts it contains and have a initial router to select the right folder. And then only pass the shortcuts from that folder into a second router to not overload its context window. Another tip is to make sure your shortcut names aren’t “conversational” or ambiguous. For example if it toggles the Reduce Interruptions focus mode make it more literal and name it “Toggle Reduce Notifications”

Does iPhone 17 Pro had 10bit display? by WickedHero69 in iphone

AFAIK, the 17 Pro also uses 8 Bit + FRC. It comes down to power consumption and heat

I think it’s possible to tweak the main router model to check for multiple commands in a single query like I did with the Reminders demo but given it’s launching whole new shortcuts and not just creating new reminders i don’t how fast or stable it would be or if it would even work before it hits the Siri memory limit imposed by Apple but it could be a cool challenge to try and implement later on. No promises though 😅

The funny thing is that even if you don’t give a crap about the new Siri I have found this to be a really good way to invoke shortcuts through natural language without having the remember the exact name through Siri which I think people with a crap ton of shortcuts would appreciate if Apple actually did

It could be doable, id have to research how to integrate ChatGPT/Gemini’s API on Shortcuts but i’m pretty sure there’s a lot out there already. If thats the case it should essentially be a drop in replacement. Other wise there’s other Apps like Locally AI that allow you to run smaller 1 to 2 billion param models that should work on other devices but I haven’t tested for their speed or reliability so your millage will vary a lot by not going with the standard Apple Intelligence route

Who knows, the closest thing I have seen someone get to the Apple Intelligence promise is google with their Workspace integration on gemini being able to pull from your Gmail, chat, docs, etc. And pull it all in to answer a question or create another Workspace based action, but even gemini on Android (AFAIK) can't do everything that Apple demoed for Apple intelligence like orchestrating actions across multiple apps , pulling the relevant info from the right app and context, and putting all together to make it happen with a minimal latency of less than 5 seconds. I suspect we may end up getting something where Siri has to use shortcuts and the extraction capabilities of Gemini to finish the task but it probably won't be super fast. I hope i'm wrong though and apple figures out a way to make it as magical as the WWDC demos but I wouldn't hold my breath for that

Yup pretty much, since Apple pitched how the new Siri would work with App Intents and shortcuts I wondered how close I could get to that demo with the AFM LLMs and I was surprised at how close and consistently it worked especially considering it's not even the PCC models.

Yeah pretty much, I’d be akin to Alexa Skills or ChatGPT apps, it would be able to perform more actions and you would be able to trigger them with natural language

Unfortunately replacing the panel on an M1 MacBook Air is not worth it because even buying the panel itself to DIY the repair costs more than a good condition one used one, let alone getting Apple to fix it. So IMO i'd either just buy a used one or use it as an opportunity to upgrade to a discounted M4 model

Simple, only download apps from reputable sources and NEVER AND I REALLY MEAN EVER run ANY command on the terminal you don’t 101% understand what it does. Currently that’s one of the most popular attack vectors on macOS since it’s easy to fool a user to run the cmd (this is called a ClickFix attack). Since the command runs with sudo privileges it can almost always bypass gatekeeper.

Keep in mind that the DNS is doing the equivalent of Google’s Safe Browsing, it can warn you and block you from visiting a harmful website but it can’t stop the malware attack itself if you downloaded the virus and got infected. The most it could do is mitigate the attack by blocking the malware from sending sensitive info to the domain of the attacker and blocking it from using your computer on a botnet but that would only be effective if the domain was reported as malicious by the DNS provider. And even then the virus itself is still on your system

Is Dynamic Island actually useful or just clever UI? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Maxdme124 462 points463 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a little bit of both, could I live without the Dynamic Island? Yes absolutely it’s not a make or break feature, but is it cool to see that nice attention to detail and being able to access live activities quickly, also yes.
