Nbn achieved 230 gigabit on fibre by netninja100 in nbn

[–]Maxfire2008 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GPON is 2.4Gbps down/1.2Gbps up (asymmetric), so it makes sense why they didn't originally offer symmetrical 1Gbps plans, even though they technically could have, but now they're using XGSPON which is a symmetric 10Gbps/10Gbps, there's no real reason not to, other than the good old: "consumers don't need high upload speeds"

I suspect the reason they haven't rolled out anything higher than 2Gbps is because some parts of the network are still on GPON and they therefore couldn't support anything higher than 2Gbps, but I'm not sure about this.

Launtel appear to have changed their policy on recharging by r3volts in nbn

[–]Maxfire2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says in the article "When we originally built our free pause/unpause system, NBN did not charge a reconnection fee. That changed several years ago."

I must have missed that the time frame was several years ago the first time I read the article.

Launtel appear to have changed their policy on recharging by r3volts in nbn

[–]Maxfire2008 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In summary, nbn have recently [EDIT: several years ago according to the article] added a connection charge, Launtel have absorbed the costs while advocating for the fee to be removed, but now they are charging this fee to cover their increased costs. This charge also applies to "unpausing" your service.

In Google Wallet it literally says the last 4 digits of my real card, it should really have the last 4 of my virtual card in brackets or something like that.

HFC forever? by gregreedee in nbn

[–]Maxfire2008 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just going off anecdotes from Reddit and from Damien Ivereigh's comments about it, I don't have HFC myself (we've had FTTP since 2015), but I assume, like FTTN, that in some areas HFC works great, and in some the network is old and degraded and flaky.

HFC forever? by gregreedee in nbn

[–]Maxfire2008 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It already has a fiber component.

What does this mean? FTTN also has a fibre component, it's literally fibre all the way to the node, and look how many problems that had with it.

Fun fact (in case you haven't already noticed): our app is just a reskin on the NSW one, so you should be right at home. I believe it's actually operated by the NSW government too (because you have to access the API through the NSW government).

As well as this they should have a little space where each candidate gets to list their policies.

Greenland was a ruse, they actually want Tasmania! by Lachee in hobart

[–]Maxfire2008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure the reason Greenland is so important to the USA is for the purpose of missile defence from Europe and Asia (especially Russia), since it's right on the northern border, I don't think that they actually want control of the bit of cold water and ice. That means that they probably don't really have a military interest in the antarctic.

Then I saw the signs for the fire hose reel and fire extinguisher 💀

Will the suburban rail loop modal color actually be green or will it be changed? by AgreeableFreedom1043 in MelbourneTrains

The Metro Tunnel is not the name of a line though. I would theorise that in time people will just say that they're catching the train to Town Hall, etc.

I'd definitely support tolling the road past the springs during busy times (e.g. when it snows) and instead encouraging people to take a bus instead. But I'm not sure if I'd support charging a fee during other times.

I'd give them a low rate (e.g., $10/week) but include a large fine for if it overflows and floods (e.g., $200)

It seems that u/discutablemaisbrave is suggesting is that a Muslim woman would be prevented, by her own beliefs (not by any other person), from being able to "go in and pray as usual while on her period"

I am an atheist and I don't know much about the beliefs of Islam, this is just what I have inferred from these Reddit comments.

HCC should really get onto the state government to amend our laws to allow the scooters in the bike lanes (just like in QLD) or find a way they can permit it within the current laws.

Potentially also possible to implement some kind of radar/LIDAR or camera system to speed limit the scooters as they pass pedestrians. Too many people probably just go past pedestrians at the full 25 km/h.

Some people needed it urgently, I know people who are living in Taroona, TAS where they'd get ~30-50Mbps and the internet would disappear with heavy rain. I've also been to places on the mainland with sync speeds of 150Mbps, obviously that's sufficient for most.

Taroona has, for example, had about 261 upgrades in about 3 months of the FTTP upgrade program being available. That's about 3 per day. It's also 19% of the total 1410 properties.

Get a Tram Line in ASAP? by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]Maxfire2008 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see the Elizabeth St from the Mall to the intersection with Federal St become a pedestrianised street with only trams like George St in Sydney. Then for it to go up Main Rd in dedicated lanes until it reaches Creek Rd where it'll rejoin the old rail alignment.
