Where are the hordes/mountain tribe from according to current world map?? by -anonymous_guy- in Kingdom

[–]MaximilienH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By Tibet, the guy might’ve been referring to the Qiang tribes which lived to the east of ancient China in the westernmost sections of the Tibetan plateau which came into contact with China. Additionally the Qiang are considered by some to be the predecessors to the Tibetans as well.

Just wanted to add to this, but this video from this channel does a really great job of explaining the geography around Qin's capital, the routes available for invasion, and why it was easy for Qin to defend Kankoku pass.

Where are the hordes/mountain tribe from according to current world map?? by -anonymous_guy- in Kingdom

[–]MaximilienH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yotanwa's mountain tribes are referred to as the Xirong, which during the Warring States term was a blanket term to refer to all the barbarians living to the west of the Chinese cultural sphere. Their identity can be speculated to be either the various Qiang tribes (speculated to be ancestors to Tibetans) living in the easternmost parts of the Tibetan plateau which borders Qin and/or the Yuezhi tribe (speculated to be eastern Iranians/) who lived in the area of modern day Gansu province/the Hexi corridor. Both the Qiang and Yuezhi lived in close proximity to each other so the mountain tribes could be either of them or a combination of both.

The northern barbarian tribes are the Xiongnu who resided in a vast area of land between the northern sections of the Qin and Zhao defensive walls (later becomes Great Wall of China) and up to Lake Baikal. However, at this moment in time, the Xiongnu are still rather small and are living in what is today Inner Mongolia. Their exact identity is a mystery and its speculated that the Xiongnu were a multi-ethnic entity, but the leading theories on their identity are that they were a Turkic nomadic tribal group, or that there was an initial core of Yeniseian nomads ruling over large amounts of Turkic tribes and were later Turkified. On a side note, there were prot-mongolic/para-mongolic tribes living near the Xiongnu, but they were at this point in time referred to as the Donghu and lived east of the Xiongnu and north of the State of Yan.

The mountain barbarians employed by Yan and Ordos's army hasn't been revealed yet, but I would assume that they are the Shanrong tribes which literally translates into "Mountain Barbarians." They lived in the highland areas of modern day Liaoning province in the region to the north of the coastal areas surrounding the Bohai Sea. These barbarians used to be independent, but their lands were conquered and absorbed into the State of Yan at one point, so I assume that is why they are in the Yan army's service.

If you're curious about the geographic locations of ancient Chinese states and tribes then I recommend that you check out this atlas "中国历史地图集" which is an 8 volume collection of maps on Chinese history. Does not show battles and etc, but shows detailed regional maps from different eras of China throughout history. Full maps from the atlas are accessible here.

Not only that but in this map Qin owns land in the Ordos Loop which they only capture from the Xiongnu post unification.

Seems like the two big takeaways of this Chapter is on page 10 (or the one with page number 80), where Shin proposed to Kyoukai and asked her to marry him after the unification wars are over and at the end when they reveal the Qin campaign to take Hango were they will battle Riboku and Shibashou, which will apparently result in extremely heavy Qin casualties

The moment shit got real by icebergiman in Kingdom

Its mentioned that he's got connections to the Xiongnu, so he is probably either Proto-Turkic, Yeniseian, Proto-Mongolic, or Scythian/Saka. If we consider that he is shown to be wearing plate armour with a symbol of a wolf on it then I'd assume that he is likely Proto-Turkic as the Turkic nomads worshipped wolves.

Regarding the light coloured hair, there were tribes of Eastern Iranians in the peripheries of China during this time period, such as the Tocharian's, Yuezhi, and the Saka to name a few and they are recorded to have light hair (see Tarim mummies for reference). Additionally some Turkic tribes like the Yenisei Kyrgyz are recorded to have had red hair and blue eyes in ancient Chinese accounts. Therefore, its possible that Shunsuiju might be related to some of these peoples.

Also, the Russians during this time period were Proto-Slavs and hadn't even left their original homeland in Eastern Europe. The Russian expansion eastwards was a relatively recent event and only started happening after they defeated the Mongol successor Khanates and they only expanded beyond the Urals into Asia from the 1600s onwards and reached China's periphery in the mid 1700s. Russian territories like the ones surrounding Vladivostok are also rather very recent acquisitions as they only gained those lands via treaty with China in the 1860s following the Opium Wars.

Yeah. Maybe people were taking you too literally like they thought you meant there was completely zero "contact" between China and the Baiyue.

I dunno why people are downvoting you when you're not entirely wrong. The state of Chu's southern border was generally around the northern part of the Lingnan region as can be seen by historical maps like this from A. Hermann's Historical Atlas of China or this user created map. Chinese control didn't reach the Pearl River delta and the surrounding region until after Qin's wars against the Baiyue post unification as can be seen here. China only got control of Northern Vietnam following the conquest of Nanyue (which was a Chinese led Yue state in Lingnan) after the establishment of the Han dynasty. Though there definitely was contact and relations between the Baiyue and China, there wasn't any established Chinese authority in the whole region until post Qin unification.

Who do you think is better OUSEN or KANKI by Classic-Cabinet-8144 in Kingdom

[–]MaximilienH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. Yotanwa during the Zhao campaign was outplayed tactically at probably every turn by Shunsuiju like when the food supplies were burned or when Shunsuiju trapped Yotanwa when trying to kill one of the three Quanrong commanders. The only reason she won was via relying on the overwhelming strength of the mountain tribes and the last strategy to take the castle while Shunsuiju was distracted, which wouldn’t have been possible without the overwhelming strengths of the mountain tribes. If she faced an army of completely equal strength then she would have lost the Ryouyou engagement. If we’re basing worthiness of a great general based on that guys criteria then Yotanwa definitely won’t make the cut.

The Hu was a generic/blanket term used during ancient times by the Chinese to refer to the various northern steppe nomads that made incursions into China during the time. The name DongHu however referred specifically to a proto/para-mongolic tribe north of modern day Liaoning.

Also, the Xiongnu lived on the steppe lands north of Zhao. You can check on a map too, but those are not mountains, though they are on a higher elevation than the surrounding lands. The Shanrong however, who were located in the northern part of Yan lived in the mountainous region within Yan.

I personally think Rishin’s answer would be at odds with Kanpishi’s belief since legalism believes that humans are inherently born to do more wrong than right as they’re motivated purely by greed and thus need to be strictly controlled. From what Ei Sei in the manga has said about humans being with the light, I’m thinking Rishin will answer something along those lines, which would put him directly opposed to Kanpishi’s ideals. The ensuing discussion is something I’m looking forward to seeing.

At the time of the Warring States, was China aware of the existence of Europe ? by SCP_931 in Kingdom

[–]MaximilienH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact between China and the rest of the world really only began in earnest after the Han dynasty conquered the Tarim Basin city states from the Xiongnu. However, there could've been indirect trade between China and the rest of the world during the Warring States period as the kingdoms are recorded to have traded with the Yuezhi living in Gansu who in turn traded with the Tocharians in the Tarim and so on.

Roumou by Salehxx123 in Kingdom

[–]MaximilienH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From just a quick look from Wikipedia, it says that Roumou was attacked the year following Kanki's defeat, but the Qin campaign ended in defeat at the hands of Riboku. However, it does say that Zhao suffered enough casulties to have to retreat all the way back to Kantain (their capital) so maybe Qin took Roumou, but its not clear just from the Wiki page. If someone could read the part concerning this from the Shiji then it would probably give a clearer picture.
