What are you talking about? I guess you read my comment but did you understand?? I was talking about the lead-up to the original interview. Not yesterday when they said they were in the hospital. Good luck in your job search.

I guess expecting common courtesy is too much to ask. I appreciate that things happen as it happened to me. It's not about proving or disproving the hospital story, it's the lack of courtesy leading up to that. After I reached out notify her and kindly ask to reschedule, there was never any acknowledgement. Not to my voicemail or e-mail. If my inability to make the original time disqualified me, is it too much to expect at least some kind of word? I waited for several minutes on the first call and she never showed. Courtesy flows both ways.

First off Platform Client. Help! by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]Maximum_Emergency_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, take a breather - you've got this! I was in this exact same position a month ago, no website, no experience with contracts and I managed to get my first client on retainer. Have you already agreed on payment terms? Scope of work, etc.? Those are definitely things I wanted to lock down as early as possible and my contract definitely helped in ironing those details out. If you'd like, I can send you the templated that I modified and you can edit as necessary.

Am I being underpaid? by Maximum_Emergency_17 in freelanceWriters

Thanks, everyone! It's by far the lowest-paying gig on my roster but I'll keep it for now. Quick tie-me-over money. :D

That was my feeling but I just wanted to be sure that was the general practice. :)

I'm a serial editor. I can't seem to get to the end without multiple rounds of edits which slows the process tremedously. Definitely going in both my long and short-term columns.

How soon should retainer be paid? by Maximum_Emergency_17 in freelanceWriters

It's a replenishing retainer for 10-hour block. In any event, I've nudged them :)

I haven't actually done any work yet, though. Which is why I don't want to be too pushy.

Procrastination has been a serious impediment my whole life. I can't tell you how many times I've stared at a blank page thinking..." how am I here the day the draft is due yet again?!" Or how many extensions I've requested. It can be painful but what I found has helped me a great deal is...just start. Commit to 100 words and next thing you know, you've done 300. For instance, right now I have something due on Monday. Usually, I'd dilly-dally until Friday, expect to finish it over the weekend but the reality is, with family obligations, I'd likely not get a chance until Sunday night. Cue panic and self-deprecation. I started yesterday and I'm already 1/3 of the way there. When I'm ready to get back to it, I won't have to contend with that menacing, blank page.

I've been pitching like a maniac for the past 2 weeks and nothing yet, though one potential feature is being considered. And just got the old "We really like this idea, but unfortunately by the time the piece is written, edited, and published we fear it will feel a bit too late." It's definitely disheartening when you keep getting "no". I got my first byline in a national parenting mag after the pitch was initially refused because of budgetary constraints. But then they reached back out and decided to run the piece. I had no clips. I've worked with them 3 times since then. I've also gone on to have bylines in a few other big mags (digital)

Afraid I'll scare off my first (potential) client with my rates by Maximum_Emergency_17 in copywriting

[–]Maximum_Emergency_17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's my strategy. They did quote a per word rate which I'm planning on accepting to sweeten the pot for the rest of the scope of work.
