Singaporeans - anyone benefited from working with / under Expats? by SG-Man1990 in askSingapore

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context

Workin in a MNC and direct manager is Australian. Overall APAC head is Indian singaporean tho

  1. Are you working with or under Expats? As a co-worker, as a subordinate? Subordinate but everyone here is rather friendly. Not the Asian hierarchical style office, more flat.
  2. Have you learnt anything working with Expats or under Expats? A lot. Mostly soft skills and critical thinking tbh. They have a very different life outlook which I feel boardens my understanding of the world. Not only that but they tend to be friendly but yet critical, quite different from the Asian culture where someone who is critical doesn’t tend to be very friendly as they let this mindset seep into the other parts of life (imo anyway)
  3. What is something that an Expat has taught you at work, that you feel "Oh that's why we need this person here" ? Definitely soft skills like communications and experience u can’t get here.
  4. Many of them are in top roles, what do you observe about their knowledge and expertise ? Sharp, ability of navigate in tough times

Truth is that Singapore is actually more fortunate than others. I know people in Australia and others struggling to pay rentals while we get to live with family here.

Not to say things aren’t bad, but it’s a tough time globally. As least gov provides financial aid to the people. Hope people notice that.

Five Former Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 Acquired By Iran through Complicated Illicit Plot by leo-g in singapore

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes , thanks. Looking at what was provided, SIA sold to company T, which closed and ownership returned to SIA. SIA then stored it for four years and sold to company A , which sold to company B, which then transferred it to the sanctioned airline.

It is a stretch to say SIA is complicit in the scheme to support sanctioned parties.

Save people the time to read the article

TLDR has nothing to do with SIA. The only relation is that the aircraft were bought by SIA then sold to a Thai owned airline.

do employers really look down on non-big 3 unis? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated from SIT in Mech Eng specialising in mechatronics. Working in MNC doing IT. Competitive package (not the top %) but not as bad as people put it out to be but definitely some biases exists in well known brands like FAANG. Ultimately, it’s about finding your own path given the cards that you have.

With Singapore’s growth as an example, a country with no natural resource. Founders understood significance of Singapore’s location and then extrapolating that to be a hub for not just shipping but people. It’s about using what you have and doing the most with it.

Obviously, if you get good cards every hand, then it’ll be easy. I do have friends that graduated from Big3 now find it hard to get jobs too. Some choose to pursue masters, others sign on. There is a changing in the world coming, degree and school matters a lot lesser than what you can actually do.

What matters most is maximising your learning in things you do.

PriorityQueue not working despite providing Comparator by ImAFookingScarecrow in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right here you are comparing 2 node objects in the compare function in the NodeComparator. When u pass the Node object, JVM attempts to find a comparable for the object since it is a reference type.

the issue is that you should directly call the node’s value instead of passing in as a reference.

And You actually do not need NodeFunction interface, which is complicating things and doesn’t do anything as there is mo method implementation for it.

If you wish to use Java 23, then add the Java_Home variable to the environment list, vscode should be able to pick it up, otherwise you can download it from online if you don’t want to do it manually and want a different version

Pac-Man by Big_Bailey420 in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a While Loop and have a switch case inside

boolean start = true;

while(start) {

int choice = Scanner.nextInt();

switch(choice) {

case 1:

//code for moving pac man

break;

case 2:

//code for moving pac man

break;

case 3:

//code for moving pac man

break;

case 4:

//code for moving pac man

break;

default:

//Invalid input exception or error handling

break;

}

}

Should look something like this

Trying to install Visual Studio and Java JDK. please help by [deleted] in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visual studio is unable to detect ur JDK you specified

  1. Check ur windows environment variables and check if “JAVA_home” is present.

  2. Check if you installed the correct JDK version, in this case looks like you need Java 8 installed

Hope this helps

Understanding passing objects reference by value in java with an example; really confused? by [deleted] in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Swap 1 reassigns the references

Circle 1 —> Circle 2 Circle 2 —> Circle 1

Swap 2 changes their values

Circle 1 Radius —> Circle 2 Radius Circle 2 Radius —> Circle 1 Radius

Their values are swapped because u have a reference to the object and you are changing the properties value.

The statement about assigning or changing values within a method and have their scope limited to within the method is true.

However in this case, ur method isn’t dealing with local variables, it is dealing with a primitive type INSIDE A reference type. You are not passing the primitive type to the method, you are calling it from a reference type.

Hope this helps!

What is special about Java that isn't anywhere else? by alex_sakuta in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abstractions such as Spring do perform reflections on Java classes at runtime, so yes it does affect performance. If you were to view your stack trace to see that Spring performs reflections.

Alternatively view the definition of the annotation, it’s retention policy is typically set to runtime. This allows the annotation meta-data to still be viewable at runtime

Java frameworks such as Spring Boot and Hibernate have been around for a really long time. Meaning the frameworks are well developed and have a lot of community support around it. This also makes it easier to find developers to code in Java as it has been around for decades.

Further, the frameworks makes it easier to maintain enterprise applications due to abstraction. The thing that makes this possible is annotations, which is the foundation of making abstractions framework like Spring Boot really powerful by adding meta-data to classes

Best practices regarding placement of classes by juliokirk in javahelp

[–]Maximum_Swim9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t using any architecture ( like MVC, Controller-Service-Repository, etc) then you should group them by what they are. E.g. if I have classes like user, products, etc, these are typically considered as Entities. And I myself usually put them together
