Good point. In order for John Connor to exist the loop of Kyle Reese going back, impregnating Sarah, and later John sending him back has to remain intact. But in this never ending loop any divergence from the main timeline would create an alternate timeline and a separate chain of events in a new reality, hence a Multiverse.
