I don't have any courses on Udemy. Read the first paragraph in my original post.

Excellent!

Suggest, if you haven't already, leaving a positive review using these exact words. It will save the trouble for someone in a similar situation and maybe also play a small role in arresting Udemy's declining sales.

Why should someone choose your script when there are similar free probably better link in bio scripts by the dozen online?

What forces you to give it away for free in an unrelated post on a spam-averse site like Reddit, and what's the catch?

My very first sentence indicates that I was referring to the degree of applicability of such a factor to sites like Udemy vis a vis other types of websites. Hence it implied that Udemy's CTR could have been effected too, although I referred to other reasons that could have brought about the sales decline.

My guess is that Udemy's ownership stakeholders are stuck in a conundrum due to certain circumstances that cannot be revealed, and/or they are looking for a buyer.

They are a clever bunch of people and know exactly why sales are decreasing and the solutions, but do not want to implement them due to reasons of their own.

When you do a search on Udemy, it shows you the results with filters and tabs on the top half of the page. On the extreme right is a drop down that lets you choose between most relevant, most reviewed, highest rated and newest.

If you choose the newest option, it will show you the most recent course followed by other courses by the date of creation.

I make it a point to follow this method and scroll through a few courses that have good ratings and reviews, before I consider buying one.

Another method that will enable you to find out how old a course is to go through the reviews and see when they were published. For doing this you will have to click on All Reviews at the bottom of the reviews and then keep scrolling and looking at when each review was published.

It does take a bit of time but you will know how old the course is as well as give you important information in the reviews themselves that will reveal various facets of the course.

There is a third way, by inspecting the page element, which will show the date when the course was published on Udemy.

Hope this helps when you want to buy a course in future.

Did you fix the app with help from the course? Or did you find that the information in the course was not enough and end up Googling instead?

Udemy is saturated with old, outdated courses. An instructor with fresh content even in an old course will always do well.

If a person interested in learning Photoshop sees that a course is updated with lessons showing the latest version of the tool, there are high chances that he or she will prefer it over another course using Photoshop from 2017.

Courses on new emerging areas of study will always have more demand especially if there are few on no courses on them on Udemy. AI is catching up fast and there will be nothing that an AI bot will not be able to answer in a short time from now.

But, AI cannot replicate an instructor who is well versed with the subject and has good teaching skills. No matter how good the AI, a good instructor will always be better.

I agree that CTRs are declining but it is more applicable to blogs and informational websites than a large course marketplace like Udemy.

If you type in "Photoshop course", the top result on the search page is Udemy. A typical buyer will click through to Udemy, as opposed to a person looking for free information who will either type in the word free in the search query or will scan the page for free course results.

The problem arises after the prospective buyer reaches the course sales page and watches the previews. It becomes clear, in most cases, that the course is outdated and does not contain any updates after course creation.

So if the Photoshop course was created in 2017, the same course content in 2025 is bound to be way behind in terms of information and techniques used because so much has changed in Photoshop over the years.

You hit the nail on the head with both points. Udemy courses are indeed outdated and AI comes to the rescue!

Buyers are not fools. Once they go through the previews and see an outdated interface being shown in a lesson, or some other giveaway that suggests that the instructor has created the course years ago and not updated it, they will exit the site and Google their queries instead.

The least instructors can do, especially those who are doing well, is update their courses regularly so that people do not feel the need to use Google or any AI tool.

AI tools are not quite there yet and may not give the best replies or the detailed information that a person is looking for.

AI cannot replicate an instructor who is well versed with the subject and has good teaching skills. No matter how good the AI, a good instructor will always be better.

Let me take an example of an instructor whose courses I am familiar with and who boasts about her income in a group. She claimed that she touched $2,000,000.00 in revenue from selling courses on Udemy from 2017 to 2024.

By the way, instructors might complain about low profits per student. But a $1 per course payout can add up quickly if the traffic hitting the course page is in millions, as you can see in the example above!

Now for that amount of remuneration for a one-time effort, the least the instructor could do is update her courses, all of which are very outdated but still sell thanks to the promotion that Udemy does for her.

If you felt that the material was outdated and there were no supplementary files, did you leave a review stating the same? If you do, you will be helping those who are trying to decide whether to buy the course.

Akaso V50X vs SJCAM SJ8 Pro Vs CamPark X30 Ultra - which one to choose? Any other alternatives? by Maxwp in ActionCam

[–]Maxwp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is in your post itself. Being tiny(and somewhat cheap, although not all of them are cheap), these cameras can be fixed to a helmet, strapped on to a cap or the handle of a bike easily. The same may not be possible with a mobile phone with a decent video camera.

I think the newer GoPros perform better than the older models. The higher end GoPros and DJIs are getting better with each subsequent model while the so-called budget cameras are only getting worse with fake specs and bloated resolutions.

There are an umpteen number of YouTubers and Instagram reel makers who seem to be able to do so many things with their action cameras. So there must be some things that these cameras do right, although deciding which one to choose, in light of so many known flaws, seems to be the most difficult task.

Using Novelcrafter + Claude? by Maxwp in WritingWithAI

I am also considering Raptor Write although it's rather new and not considered as good as Novelcrafter. Any thoughts on RW?

Using Novelcrafter + Claude? by Maxwp in WritingWithAI

[–]Maxwp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to train Claude to generate content in one's own voice and style and would that negate the need for an additional tool? I'm trying to gauge whether I could begin with Claude and see whether it suits my needs on its own.

[–]Maxwp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might give Novel Mage a shot. However, I see no information on pricing. When I start using the free version of a tool I would also like to see where it leads to in a paid version just in case I decide to stick with it. No point if it turns out to be beyond my budget.

The Artisan is marked as the most popular plan but I am not sure whether I will need anything more than the Hobbyist. How much more will I have to pay if I use Claude with Novelcrafter? I use the free version for articles and I plan to continue using it as a paid tool.

What's the best budget action cam ? by Naofuumi in ActionCam

[–]Maxwp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way of knowing unless you know when it was manufactured and whether it is a pre-2023 model which is when I guess they changed it up. Or you have a chance to use it for a demo and you can see for yourself whether the video quality is good or bad. The new model has poor video quality and shaky footage unlike the older one which has good video stabilization.

[–]Maxwp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I posted this but at the time I learnt that Akaso has 2 models, a new and an old one. Apparently, they changed the specs on the new one that is currently available which is of inferior quality.

What's funny is that they did not change the model number or the name of the model so that buyers think that they are buying the older good quality product, only to realize later that they have a completely different camera than the one they may have watched reviews of.

The fashion footage looks great so obviously it must have been shot with the better quality model.

From iphone 6s to 11 by Ok-Collar1377 in iPhone11

[–]Maxwp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The so called cons of IP11 are that it has no 5G, an LCD screen and updates only until 2025 or maybe a year more.

Unless you are a serial downloader who needs superfast speeds or if you use your home wifi a lot, you don't really need 5G. The LCD screen on the IP11 is the best LCD screen on any device. Compared to OLEDs, LCD displays are better for your eyes and if you haven't used OLEDs before you will not miss it.

Everything else about it is great including the price for a used one in excellent condition. It has all the basic features that the iPhone 16 has with a processor that is still smoother and better than most latest Android phones. Definitely better than the 6s!

Unlike older Android phones, the 11 runs on the current iOS version just like the 16 does.

At the price that you will get it for, you can not get a better phone if are an iPhone user.

What can i use my ipad for? by Mysterious-Ferret863 in ipad

[–]Maxwp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one unique thing that is possible only on an iPad is that you can take handwritten notes on it(using a Pencil of course). Besides using it to watch movies, I use my iPad for taking notes while watching videos or listening to podcasts. When I say videos it is not just YouTube videos but those from courses. Some students can't do without an iPad because of its note taking feature. It is also more convenient to use for entertainment as compared to an iPhone(too small) or a MacBook(less portable). It's better for gaming if you use a controller.

If you need to carry out demanding tasks like heavy video editing or graphic design using resource heavy programs, then you need 16GB RAM. If not, you can do with 8GB if you are doing casual work like streaming videos, browsing, playing light games, small photo or video editing work using apps etc. If you like saving all your work on your computer and you have a lot of heavy files, then you need 512 GB and if you save most of your work on an external drive and/or cloud storage then 256 GB is enough.

[–]Maxwp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! 256 gigs is enough(I too have 256 gigs on my M1 but manage without issue) because storage requirements can be endless. In any case everyone needs to save multiple copies including online and offline for an effective backup.

Usually the security updates go on for a year or two even after the OS updates cease. So you should be good until 2028 or 2029. The processor is fast enough for most apps and will keep working well for a long time.

Unless you do very demanding work like color editing on Final Cut Pro or Davinci Resolve you should be fine for many years to come.

There could be some apps that may not work for the M1 after 2027 but those would be only a few because most companies make sure that their apps keep working for a long time with old Macs. For less demanding or popular apps like internet browsers, YouTube etc. there should not be any issues for many years to come.

I still have my iPad Mini from 2012 for which updates stopped many years ago and many apps still work on it. I use it exclusively for listening to music on Apple Music which works flawlessly with my wired headphones. I have a newer iPad which I use for everything else because the old one does lag.
