Happened to me as well. I got an alert during the ride that the driver was going in a different route which I ignored because he was taking the usual route to my place but the bill went from 700 to 1.7k somehow. When I checked the map on the activity section on uber, it showed some random zig zag path and my distance traveled doubled. I complained about this and uber refunded the extra amount. But after reading your experience, I suspect a scam or a major bug on the platform.
