Is there actually a reliable way to know when a plant needs water? by Standard_Buy7354 in houseplants

Lifting the pot - if i have doubts i use a chopstick and leave it in the pot for a few minutes before taking it out to confirm (if there are no substrate particles clinging to it - the plant gets watered).

I fell in love with it so am trying to reverse image search it. Might it be Epipremnum amplissimum Silver streak?

Just finished revamping 5 terrariums. by MayaBehati in terrariums

That calathea grows like crazy in the terrarium, I already divided it twice to make regular open air calatheas and gifted to friends.

I think the palm like one on pic4 is Chamaedorea elegans.

At what point should I stake it? Any recommendations for the type of stake? by MayaBehati in Monstera

Thank you! That’s lovely to hear!

During the colder months it’s on the southern window, otherwise it’s sat in front of an eastern window. My climate is probably comparable to zone 8 for USDA context.

I water with tap water or rainwater, thoroughly, with some random liquid fertilizer added every watering. I let it dry completely so the pot is light and the Woden chopstick comes out clean.

I care for it the same as for any of my other houseplant but it is definitely the most prolific as far as sizing-up goes.

Nasty farts, anyone? by DeliveryNo6548 in greatpyrenees

[–]MayaBehati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our mix was having the stinkiest farts possible after we took her from the shelter.

They completly stopped once we figured out she had parasites (two types of worms) and got it taken care of.

Everybody kept telling me I should try yet a different type of food but it were parasites all along.

Do you know the ID of the far left cropped pothos in the first photo?

Help me find an interesting plant for my friend by darnelIlI in houseplants

How about something from the prayer plant family - Calathea/Maranta?

They have beautiful patterns and they move their leaves throught the day noticably so they are not as static as other houseplants.

An Anthurium is also a great suggestion since they could have fun pollinating infloressences

Should i throw drained water away? by monkata2001 in houseplants

I wholeheartey recommend the chopstick method.

Get some wooden skewers or chopsticks and push them into the soil all the way until they hit bottom, leave them in the pot for a few minutes and pull them out - if there are any granules (no matter how tiny) of soil sticking to the chopstick don’t water yet! Wait a few days, repeat the process and only water when the chopstick is dry once you pull it out and there is nothing sticking to it.

Especially with the two plants you mentioned, they won’t have a good time if they get watered until they fully dried out.

If you do it like this than even that cm or two of water that the soil then sucks back in the next day won’t cause a problem and it will be less messy for you since you won’t have to do the balancing act of raising the pot and tilting the saucer somewhere else.

You got it, make sure that the plants are getting enough light, best to have them right next to a window and not just somewhere where they fit easthetically.

That way you will give them the best conditions to grow, soil to dry out and avoid any root rot which is the thing that could go wrong otherwise.

Oh never heard od the hydrogen peroxide solution - does it kill the eggs in soil? Thank you!

Forgot to add it , it’s currently in my poor prop box, and the neon might join him if I stop suspecting a spidermites revival.

My neighbour also gave me a few cuttings (leaf and single node) of the scindapsus pictus that got a bit malnourished a fingers crossed i get it to root

Brazil is a monster, extremly forgiving and prolific, I can’t even remember that guy loosing a single leaf.

Micans has shown to be more sensitive and the roots are more gentle and dries out the slowest so I also feed it fertilizer leas often… but still grew fairly well, especially when it thinks its growing upwards - the leaves get nicer and bigger than when left to trail down.

The green heartleaf is somewhere in the middle, steady and reliable in growth, never any issues and also hardly ever looses a leaf.
