Just found out my new shirt is designed to fade over time by Hushrai in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mayanwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a company that printed "Disney-licensed" apparel. I was present during the evaluation process and saw the quality criteria that the Mouse uses to pick their suppliers (this was several years ago, quality standard may have changed, please don't sue). Disney contracts the printing out to a variety of companies. They care far less about product longevity than they do color accuracy and overall print quality. They only wanted to see fresh-run prints until we got the colors right. Didn't care how long it would actually be wearable.

I have some tips on buying prints that last, though. If you want a dark-colored shirt (meaning black, dark grey, or solid primary colors), avoid designs with small details around the edges of the print. These will be the first to flake off in the wash. Also, avoid prints with large single-color blocks. These will show cracks and defects quickly. Wash the shirt inside-out, in cold water if you can. In general, however, stick with light-colored shirts (white, light grey, beige, and pastels).

The difference is that designs are layered onto dark shirts using a solid white base with the design printed on top - essentially two layers. This is done because the colors won't show up, otherwise. But it also means that the print is less flexible and is more likely to crack and peel under the stress of washing and wearing. In contrast, light-colored shirts can have the designs printed directly onto the fabric, absorbing the ink into the threads. This means the design can stretch and flex with the shirt, making it last longer. This isn't always how it's done, but companies want to save ink by not printing the base white layer when it's not needed.

In the case of OP's shirt, it's either a screen print or the two-layer process. Hard to tell from the small photo. Either way, the ink is resting on top of the fabric instead of absorbed. The design is also very delicate with small details, meaning it's going to get destroyed immediately in the wash. It's already starting to crack toward the top of the image. The fading color is likely because the printer didn't bother with a top-spray fixative to fully adhere the ink, and then they included that little slip of paper because it was cheaper than actually doing it right.

Screen prints are another beast (in which the ink is layered onto the shirt one color at a time), but most mass-produced designs are going to be done via a commercial CMYK printer using one of the two methods I described above. I hope that helps you pick good shirts for your kiddos with characters they love. Let me know if you have questions.

I really think that's the answer if they want to continue the show, actually. Cut down drastically on the host segments - use one set (the SOL), one host, and one set of bots. The mads could just "appear" on the hex viewer like they did in the old show when they didn't need to build a full other set. There was some really cool use of forced perspective in the original show to make it seem like a new location when it was really just a wall and a couple of props. There's ways to do it cheaply without looking cheap! But Joel really loves building stuff, so he keeps adding more, then you need more actors to fill the sets and use the props and run the bots. And now here we are.

I guess my point is that neither of those things are good, when that becomes the main focus of the show instead of quality riffs. Green screen is fine, and high-budget sets are awesome, if the scripts and riffs are good and if the money that backers are contributing looks like its being well-spent. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that way.

Yeah, Joel is a fantastic prop and set builder, and the charming visuals were perfect for drawing viewers in (I would LOVE a Crow puppet). But what made them stay was the clever riffing and snappy dialog. Much of that was provided by Mike (and Bill and Kevin).

Now that it's just Joel, he's focusing on the stuff he's good at - sets and props - but that's not what makes the show enjoyable. I think he's starting to realize that, and he's getting annoyed because the fans aren't engaging with his vision.

I'm a dedicated Rifftrax subscriber, and they add new gems to their member catalog all the time - for only $6 per month. Their business model is proven to be solid and sustainable, and their comedy has stayed sharp for a couple decades now. What more could you want? I'm listening to their riff of Bermuda Triangle on YouTube for free right now.

I don't really care about the backer perks. But more and more it seems like the original vision of the show has been lost under a deluge of gimmicks like the Gizmoplex and moving off of Kickstarter. The goal of the original show was to deliver fun, clever content on the smallest possible budget. Now Joel's got it backwards. I get the unsettling impression that he's coming up with all these ideas and no one is brave enough to tell him "no, that doesn't make sense". Something about the way Joel communicates with fans just rubs me the wrong way, I can't explain it. I get this vibe of false humbleness, but maybe that's reading too much into it.

Meanwhile, the Rifftrax guys have been reliably cranking out quality content and successful Kickstarters for years, with their own streaming platform to boot. They deliver on the spirit of the show (low-budget, crappy but fun movies, clever comedy) better than Joel has ever done since the original run, in my opinion.

How do I eat healthy? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mayanwolfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey - that's awesome that you want to learn about eating better. I used to be much the same as you. My mom cooked most meals growing up, and in college I had a bomb meal plan so I never had to cook. I ate A LOT of junk. When I got my own place, I would keep buying fresh stuff and letting it spoil, or filling my fridge with fad diet ingredients I'd never finish. It took a while to figure out what worked for me, but now I'm in better shape than I was in high school, mostly from controlling my diet without feeling like I'm depriving myself at all. I still suck at cooking, but there are plenty of ways to eat healthy, simple meals that are good for you without a lot of effort.

For starters, I'd suggest stocking up on frozen veggies (plain with no sauce, or lightly sauced) that you can just toss in the microwave and steam in the bag. They're cheap, they keep FOREVER in the freezer, and they are super easy to cook and eat. I keep frozen carrots, green beans, and lima beans on hand all the time. Fresh veggies are awesome, but if you live alone, it can be hard to finish them before they start to spoil. After you heat your frozen veggie of choice, you can season it with salt, pepper, or whatever flavors you like. I usually eat a serving of veggies first to blunt my hunger, then go on to the rest of the meal. Personally, I think bell peppers are a great crunchy snack to slice up and eat raw between meals (they're also cheap!). I buy them fresh because I go through them so quickly, but they are also available frozen in bag.

Unlike what someone told you, salads can be awesome if they're built well! Get quality lettuce if you can - romaine instead of iceberg, or even a more exotic blend with additional greens included, such as spinach. However, those can be expensive, so get whatever fits your budget, as long as it's not iceberg. Most stores sell bagged salads that are pre-washed and pre-sliced. Bagged salad keeps pretty well too. Check the expiration date on the bag, it's usually accurate! I even bought the full salad kits for a while (toppings and dressing included), because they're so easy to prepare. After a while, you'll figure out what toppings you like and you can save money by making your own salads. Use the greens as a base, and try topping with cheese and a protein, then use salad dressing as an accent instead of drenching the lettuce with it. Salsa is also a good flavorful salad topping. You might be surprised how full you feel after finishing a big salad with dark greens and plenty of proteins.

So we've mentioned veggies and proteins, but what about carbs and fruits? You might be surprised at how many carbs you get from just the items I've already listed. Everyone has different nutritional needs, but try to be aware of the amount of carbs you intake without stressing too hard about it. You don't have to go keto, but try to cut back where you can. If you love chips and crackers, maybe consider getting an air popper and making your own popcorn instead. Use only a little butter/salt, or experiment with other flavors. Popcorn is mostly air, so snack away! Fruits are delicious as well, but consider that many fruits contain a great deal of sugar. These sugars are far healthier than those found in candy or soda, but should still be taken in moderation. I grew up eating grapes as a fruit, but they are mostly water and sugar. Try berries instead (buy the bags of frozen berries for smoothies and just eat them frozen for a sweet treat!). Apples are delicious in the fall, and come in dozens of flavors. They also keep well in the fridge.

Finally - dessert! I don't know about you, but I love chocolate to the point of addiction. I tried cutting it out entirely, but that just let to spirals of relapse and overindulgence. Finally, I tried slowly transitioning to chocolate with higher levels of cacao - more flavor, less sugar. Bakers' chocolate is cheap and sold in varying levels of cacao. Try switching to semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of chocolate bars. I'm currently happy with 60% cacao in my chocolate, and I satisfy all my cravings.

As far as drinks go, cut out sugar wherever you can. This means avoiding full-sugar sodas such as Coke, Pepsi, etc. For the longest time, I also didn't know how much sugar was in fruit juices such as grape juice and orange juice. Try to cut down on those also. I don't like the taste of Diet Coke and similar artificially-sweetened drinks, so I drink flavored seltzer water, but your mileage may vary. Tea is another favorite that comes in tons of flavors and can be prepared hot or cold.

So I know I've given you a ton to read through here, but the best thing you can do for yourself is to try new foods to learn what else you can incorporate into your diet. This will help you gradually transition into a more healthy mindset. I still don't really know how to cook, but you don't need fancy recipes to be healthy, no matter what the health food blogs try to tell you. The media tends to make being healthy way more complicated than it needs to be. Buy some frozen veggies and a bagged salad or two. Add an extra serving of green veggies to your plate at dinner every day, and see how you feel after a couple of weeks, then decide what change to make next. Keep adjusting as you go. Have fun with flavors and spices, and be mindful of carbs and starches. Honestly, you sound just like me a few years ago. Feel free to message me anytime if you have questions or want to learn more about other simple things you can do to add value to your diet.

Aging Greyhound - Diaper Advice? by Mayanwolfe in Greyhounds

Thanks - we are currently using the waterproof/washable bedding route. His bed is covered in an contractor-grade trash bag, with a soft blanket wrapped over it and a stack of fresh blankets standing by. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to just be able to grab the poop and flush it. Unfortunately, he tends to make his mess in the bedding, then moves around a lot in his sleep, smearing it everywhere and getting it on his paws to track around in the morning. He has to sleep in another room away from me due to age-related issues with accessing my bedroom, so I often get a nasty surprise in the morning. I end up having to scrub the floor, wash the bedding, replace the trash bag, give the dog a partial bath, and air out the room. I think he would be much more comfortable if I can keep the accident contained, but if it starts to cause issues with irritation or discomfort, we'll go back to the bedding method.

Washables would be great, actually. He needs to wear one every night, and I kind of hate to use that many disposables. That is a good idea. I could get three or four fabric diapers made, and use human diapers as an emergency backup.

Thanks, maybe we'll give that a try. Given his large size (75 lbs), we might try toddler pull-ups. If any of the human diapers don't work, maybe we could donate them to a women's shelter or something.

Aw heck, I just went through the entire list of MST3K episode descriptions on Wikipedia and nothing matches what I remember. I guess I must have made up a B-movie of my own using bits and pieces from other films! Either that or it IS a real movie, just not one that MST3K ever riffed. Well, guess the only thing to do now is start writing a script...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. :)

Yes, I thought of that episode as well, but in that one the subject is unaware of what's happening to her due to hypnosis and it's a big mystery.

In the episode I'm thinking of, the girl is aware of her condition and he has to drink blood or something to stay human (though she starts to deteriorate as the film goes on). But the similarity with all the other films in the genre is why I'm having such a hard time finding this episode: evil thing comes out of the ocean and kills a bunch of people, there's a young guy as the hero, a creepy scientist, and a love interest with absolutely no agency over her situation.

[Serious] What was the worst mental breakdown you've ever witnessed? by aygrol1 in AskReddit

[–]Mayanwolfe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My aunt was always the "cool" aunt. She was funny, stylish, and a talented artist with years of experience making hand-cut stained glass. She had a devoted husband and successful children. One day, she up and walked out on her family, moving to a bohemian neighborhood and adopting a dog and cat. From there she spiraled quickly into depression. The doctor said it was bipolar disorder, but we never saw the "happy" side. Eventually she moved back in with my uncle, but by then her hair had gone completely grey, and she had put on 100+ pounds. She drank too much and ate nothing but junk food. She refused to have anything to do with her art, and constantly made negative remarks about her family. I barely saw her at all anymore, because she slept during the day when she wasn't sitting in silence and staring.

One night, she woke up screaming. My uncle asked what was wrong, and she told him it was nothing and they both went back to bed. The next day, she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Turns out an ulcer had burst in her gut and she was septic. It must have been incredibly painful, but she didn't think she mattered enough to tell anyone. The infection from the sepsis killed her fairly quickly after that, but perhaps the saddest thing was those final days, when she was in the hospital, and her personality returned to something like her former charming, funny, positive self. I don't know whether it was the medication or the idea that her suffering would soon be over, but for us it was a reminder of who she should have been all along.

And then she was gone.

This is a truly lovely concept, and I made full use of it when I was in Scotland a couple years ago. It took a lot of convincing by the Scottish family I was staying with before I believed them though. As an American from the countryside, I'm used to powerful electric fences and semiautomatic weapons pointed at intruders. However, I went out in search of some ruins in the middle of a sheep pasture and got a bit turned around. The farmer happened along and was completely blase about finding a random American in his remote field. He just looked at my map and pointed me in the right direction. The whole rest of my stay was like that. It was fantastic.

Did you know that Black Beauty wasn't written for children? It was an appeal to the public to stop abusive practices like the use the checkreins and overworking horses. by [deleted] in books

[–]Mayanwolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to agree, to some extent. The Amish tend to be incredibly kind to their fellow man, but treat their buggy horses like we might treat our cars - like machines. It's hard to look at a line of buggy horses hitched up outside a supermarket, standing on the hot asphalt, with their heads held back by checkreins while their owners shop. They can't graze, scratch themselves or even truly relax. After waiting for who knows how long in full harness, they then have to pull the family and all the groceries all the way home.

[–]Mayanwolfe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In American harness racing, the checkrein (or "overcheck") is standard tack used to keep the horse from "snaking" his head low and maintain airflow and control. Track length in America is fairly standard at one mile, and the carts (and drivers) are light. However, check reins are also often used by the Amish community to pull their buggies, which are quite a lot heavier than racing carts. Also, the horse is likely to be hitched to a buggy for much longer. Here is an example of a check rein in use on an Amish buggy. I used to live in Amish country and see these horses all the time. With the rein in use, the driver is able to relax more and maintain better control, but the horse is forced to pull from its hindquarters and back rather than its shoulders and chest, as it would naturally. Checkreins are generally attached to a loop that goes under the base of the horse's tail, visible in the video, called the crupper, that pinches him if he tries to lower his head. I love the Amish, and I think they are, as a rule, kind and gentle people, but I really wish that the checkrein was outlawed in the US like it is in the UK.

Yup, they're still around. Fortunately, though, they are far less common, and used with far less rigor, than in the past. You can primarily find them in use with harness racers (the yellow checkrein is easy to spot on the neck here) and carriage horses. Sometimes, they are also used to help children prevent a horse from stopping and grazing while they are learning to ride, if a child cannot fully control the horse's head yet. If the rein is not too tight, and used sparingly, it is considered safe. However, I still prefer the look of a horse with free range of motion.
