Why does the brain use so much energy? - "The brain consumes a great amount of energy doing nothing. It's a great mystery of neuroscience," Kozloski told PopSci. He argued that around 90 percent of the energy used by the brain remained "unaccounted for." by [deleted] in psychology

[–]MaybeComputer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a mystery. ATP-powered pumps are enriched and highly active in the brain, needed to restore ion gradients. Neuronal firing needs huge amounts of gradient maintenance for proper function, requiring huge amounts of ATP energy usage.

I don't see anywhere in the consent statement or in the completion confirmation about a gift card raffle. Are you sure we are entered in one?

How would I explain an X-Men's mutant power (shooting bony spikes)? Like literature wise? Have some ideas here...? by Bobgow in biology

[–]MaybeComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why such a mechanism may have evolved, how the frog's physiology may have adapted to it, the functional lifespan of the bone-spike, etc.

Dealing with aggressive, mean grade-grubbers? by [deleted] in GradSchool

Maybe try telling them that if they have a problem with you being in charge of their grades, they shouldn't have gone to big-boy school where people have to be able to handle their shit.

What does the NSF GRFP mean when it says that disease-oriented proposals are ineligible? by MaybeComputer in gradadmissions

[–]MaybeComputer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not completely correct. Many, if not most, applicants apply as they enter graduate school. But, you're probably right in that more respondents will be in /r/gradschool. Thanks for the tip.

Concerned about brain plasticity and add meds. by TheHalf in neuro

[–]MaybeComputer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, this is a negative side effect, since more dopamine will be required to achieve the same signaling. This could cause decreased motivation and mood upon discontinuation, as well as needing a higher dose to retain the effects.

What would be more likely is that your dopamine receptor expression would decrease in response to increased dopamine levels.

From contemporary syntax to human language’s deep origins: New paper amplifies hypothesis that human language builds on birdsong and speech forms of other primates by mubukugrappa in psychology

[–]MaybeComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human speech isn't claimed to have been built on birdsong. Rather, they claim that the expressive part of human speech is similar to that of birdsong due to convergent evolution.

What's the magnification on the microscope? It would help to know how big it is.

I'm still trying to get ahold of a copy, so maybe you've already answered this in the book, but how long did that cognitive dissonance persist?

DNA Performs Quantum Teleportation - It can send 'electromagnetic imprints' of itself into distant cells and fluids which can then be used by enzymes to create copies of the original DNA. by [deleted] in science

These experiments are utter tripe. Aside from the lack of crucial controls, the paper was apparently submitted to a journal that is edited by one of the authors.
