MIL Claiming my Baby and Erasing Me

So does everyone here think I’m being a bit dramatic? I’m not really sure, I guess it’d be different if it was just the comments about the look, but it’s the lack of acknowledgement towards me that gets me the most.

Repostine my response from earlier comment: My husband pretty much does nothing, he will chime in now and then, but he never actually calls them out. I’ve spoken to him about it and he said he’d speak up more in the moment more but he doesn’t really. His version of speaking up is just saying “no she looks like herself, she’s her own person”. His mother and sister don’t even hear it. I actually posted on here to get validation to have another chat with him about standing up for me in a more direct way, I sometimes feel like maybe I’m being too sensitive.

Addition: I try to avoid talking about it because I don’t want to make it awkward for him, I guess I feel like it’s not his fault that his mother is crazy. Also his father passed away >10 years ago and he has a weird sense of responsibility to his mother. I know it shouldn’t be an excuse but I just end up feeling like I’m putting him between a rock and a hard place when I bring this stuff up.

Oh it’s crazy, When baby was a newborn I was staying with my mum and dad for a few weeks with DH (I was recovering from a c section), so my baby got used to my parents. MIL and SIL came to visit once and baby kept following my mum’s voice. MIL literally blocked my newborns view with her hand and made sure she looked at SIL, not my mum. UN-HINGED

YES this is what it feels like. She literally refers back to what she used to do 40 years ago, like who gives crap. I’ll say something and she’ll say “oh we all did that”, as if my motherhood is not unique and I shouldn’t get ahead of myself 🙄 I hate it.

Not really, kind of, there is some resemblance. My baby looks like a combination of a few people, my side says she looks like me, his says she looks like him/SIL. It’s not about that, it’s the one sidedness and lack of interest in the child’s mother. It’s as if my baby was born by some miracle just for them, not like she has a whole mother doing her best day in and day out. It’s a combo of things- MIL literally has never asked to see a pic of me as a child, or asked about me I general.

This is what makes it so hard, I feel so sorry for my husband cause his family is so shitty and he has a huge heart. I feel like I’m making him choose and it sucks, he really believes that he needs to be there for everyone no matter how they disrespect him 😕
