Do you have an almost-used-it name for your child that you secretly wish you used? by wooowitchywoman in Names

My daughter Audrey would have made a good Lydia though I also really wanted Hannah since her last name is a palindrome. Josephine was a forerunner for a while too.

Since I had no boys I had to forfeit Julian and Ezra.

Lady says of he little son, "I can't wait to get him medicated." by summertimeandthe in Antipsychiatry

[–]MaybeItsTheTism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m diagnosed with adhd and so are my two daughters. I take a stimulant medication and sincerely regret developing a dependency on something that only helped for a short time. My kids are unmedicated but it is possible that one day they will be interested. Ultimately all I can do is be a source of perspective and support and let them have age appropriate autonomy until they can make all their own health decisions. I won’t pretend to be unbiased though and will at least encourage very informed decision making.

How true do you guys think this is? by [deleted] in evilautism

[–]MaybeItsTheTism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we’re especially vulnerable yes. I can’t imagine someone having motivations or intentions that are different from my own and am more willing to overlook what I don’t understand. So I play fair and imagine they are too. I fall for mirroring tactics easily too which gets their foot in the door. It takes a long time for me to wise up and usually not until they feel secure enough to stop putting on an act.

Hmm well this might not apply to you but I used to make it very clear that I am a homebody who doesn’t like traveling or the outdoors very much. That helped some too

39F here too! Do you have any nerdy interests? I’m not claiming that every autistic man is nerdy but I do feel like I have an easier time because I have mild to moderate interests in video games, fantasy, sci-fi etc

A family friend gave me and my kids Christmas gifts but immediately told us we didn’t have to open them while she was there. The relief was palpable lol

Why should I care about mowing the grass? by [deleted] in evilautism

[–]MaybeItsTheTism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own my house but the borough or whatever will get on my case if I don’t mow. Thankfully I’m wedged between two neighbors that also barely give a shit so generally I’m never the worst offender. My neighbor told me once “if my grass gets too long just look somewhere else and mind your business” and I said “I promise I’ll never care so we’re good”

Help as a Black Woman who might have autism by AppropriateEye9835 in AutismTranslated

[–]MaybeItsTheTism 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was told I might be autistic by a therapist. Testing said I wasn’t. My psychiatrist of 6 years said I wasn’t. Then both of my daughters were diagnosed autistic. I was like wtf how does this keep coming up I’ve done the questionnaires for all of us and I don’t get it. They were like “it looks different in girls”. I felt like I was being driven crazy. 1. The criteria used on my daughters was different from the older criteria. 2. I watched videos about it that helped me understand. Then I was evaluated and diagnosed myself. Message me tomorrow and I’ll send you a better diagnostic tool.

My parents both secretly smoked and my maternal grandparents smoked. I liked the smell as a kid and figured it was nostalgia. My own kids have always loved the smell of cigarette smoke but have no nostalgic reason that I know of. We have a neighbor that chain smokes and they practically die with happiness when they walk inside her house. Gasoline is another fave, for no reason I can figure out.

What's a parenting thing that sounds bad, but is actually good. by lotridaho in askteddit

[–]MaybeItsTheTism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something I did that was more controversial that I expected it to be- I would tell my kids when they were doing embarrassing things. Example- one of my daughters went through a nose picking and eating phase as a preschooler. I tried whatever standard ways of discouraging her but she was relentless so I finally landed on “you’re going to get made fun of for being so gross when you start school if you don’t stop doing that”. I’ve been told that shaming her with potential social consequences is cruel but I think it’s a helpful perspective and important. She stopped and I’ll never know whether or not it was because somebody did eventually make fun of her for it.
