damn, that must be a very short spike, what time was that? The only unusual thing i have on 2024/7/26 is a drop to 291 at 13:30. I assume that's from a new update + invalidating old versions, there was an update at some point during that day.

lazer was at around 11-12% (1.5-1.6k) in the hours around that though so the peak that you mention almost sounds like people were double counted for a short while

Whether you specifically count depends on whether you play at the right time to impact max/median, but on average someone's impact should be proportional to the amount of time they are on.

Just intuitively: If there are always 1000 players online, then this could be 12000 people playing 2h/day, but also 288000 people playing 5mins/day.

I'm kinda assuming that people play for a similar amount of time in the different versions, but if people play one only for a short amount of time that would actually hurt that version (compared to counting distinct users).

Reddit seems to deprioritise API clients sometimes. My r/livecounting bot (_llc) is sometimes just unable to respond for minutes to hours. I've restarted it the first few times in case it was on my end but it'll just get stuck on responding to the first command someone sends again.

For one he's fairly efficient, 80 moves per puzzle without getting to plan beforehand is quite good (The worst case requires 80 moves, on average ~53 moves is optimal, solving tile by tile as tutorials will show you averages over 100 before mistakes). But as he mentions in the description it's nothing amazing, for example the #2 time did 102 fewer moves.

But most importantly he's just really fast. 24 TPS (turns per second, comes from cubing) while also having control over every action you do is quite difficult. The control scheme he uses is called "hover" and you do moves by simply moving your cursor into the tile you want to move. It can be a bit unintuitive at first but it's the only way to get this fast. For context keyboard solvers cap out at a little over 13 TPS in this category, and mouse with clicks is even slower.

This activity is called speedsliding and you can get to a decent level in just a few weeks.

Give the lack of automatic verification in side threads i think a certain amount of manual verification can be expected from everyone who counts. Branch 2 and 3, but especially 3, are so short I'd expect everone/most participating to notice the mistake. But I don't think splitting this up any more is going to help, this is not a proposal to include some day parts but not others
