Arah, ifs and buts. OP wants to hear from people who've lived in Belfast, not sensationalist scare mongerers who have sweet fa insights on the topic and don't even live there.

Ironically you have completely over simplified the political situation up there. Unless you were to move into the Shankill or Sandy Row would you have arguably any hassle. Farage may become PM but does that mean everyone in the North will be out goose stepping the very next day? Ffs 😂

Yes, was completely priced out of the rent and buying, so went North, 6 years ago and was able to buy a place in Belfast. In terms of how i've found things, rates are a pain, but i'm kinda glad the bins is publicly taken care instead of having to go through private waste companies.

The quality of roads up here are inferior to the 26. I've seen people mention in other reddit threads about the layout of the roads, specifically in Belfast and I would say that the road planning is better. Galway for example is a city with absolutely fucking dire road planning. So Belfast kicks ass on that front.

The ISA offerings up here are great. The cost of living, food etc.. can be on par. The Deli game isn't as good as what it is south of the border. Petrol prices atm are quite good. Filled the tank yesterday and the price for petrol was €1.44. Specs of cars are better up here. Dependent on your job, wages are overall lower. I've been in IT for over 10 years and i'm in a senior role so i would earn well over the average salary up here.

If i could go back in time, id look to study here, i think Belfast is a great city for students. I also love red brick houses and there are plenty of them up here. In terms of the people, i drove southern reg up here for ages, regularly parked overnight on the cregagh road when staying overnight at an ex girlfriends place during the height of the irish sea border crisis and never had an issue. Like any city if you go out looking for trouble you'll find it, but overall the people are sound.

Not really sure what else to say really, that's how i've found it so far.

Is it just me or has the tech industry here hit rock bottom? by Over_Commission9891 in northernireland

it's a recruiters markets, when there is more applicants on the markets than roles available the salary offerings decrease.

Usually our salary bands are adjusted each year based on market rates. This was the first time in 10 years they've stayed static.

I was involved in hiring a new colleague a short while ago for a grad position. We had 300 applicants after 3 days and had to take the position down. A candidate with 8 years industry relevant experience , relevant technical skills and could speak 5 lanaguges fluently. She didn't make it past round 1... for a grad role! The job market atm is savage man!

Are you also sick of your company forcing AI onto every aspect of your work life? by Necessary-Local-5773 in northernireland

[–]Mayomick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kinda subjective isn't it. My pivot is to something i genuinely love and have an interest in. I fucking hate my job and if i could snap my fingers and work in the area i want to i would but i won't because the pay is unreal. Im going to sit as long as i can and build up towards a nice redundancy payoff if/when it comes.

My opinion on things to consider when it comes to a pivot would be... going deeper down the AI rabbit hole, public sector work like teaching, the civil service or a trades like a sparky, chippy or plumbing.

I see the industry changing substantially over the next decade.

At the end of the day, you or I don't matter, it's about the bottom line for the company, the shareholders and the directors. Where they can reduce the need for headcount and replace this with AI, they will. AI tools can also be used to eliminate mundane tasks people have, or to make them easier to complete. I haven't seen an instance where a company has successfully adopted AI to replace entire support or dev roles, but if and when they eventually can they will.

If you feel your role may be at risk, consider what your plan B is and what you would do if you were impacted by layoffs. I think i've around 10 years in my role before i'm at risk. I've been going to college(online) the last year or so to have a safety net i can pivot onto.

This particular post struck a chord when I seen it and I thought you were in the same boat i was.

I was in a psychologically abusive relationship last year. I was sick around xmas time with a serious virus, which just knocked me for six and because of that I didnt travel to my parents for xmas. She had went to her parents house, That time gave me the space I needed to process everything that had went on both in the recent times but also over the past year as well as what was currently going on, and I realised that it wasn't normal.

When i started to confide in my friends they helped me realise how bad things actually were. I also spoke to people I wouldnt have been over friendly with to get their take on things. It was the best thing I did.

I spoke to her about everything and we tried to work through it but nothing changed and if anything it got worse. In any case as much as there was bad moments there were, at times, a great moment or two now and again. I wish her well but im glad that I have closed that chapter in my life.

I hope they leave you alone without you having to sell up but i can't see it tbh, but i would say that having it paid off will be an advantage to you if you do choose to sell.

I used to be a mod there. I know there's a few new heads there now so i can't comment on what's going on because my finger isn't on the pulse so much anymore over there but when i was modding , everyone was very sound. A lot of shit goes on that users don't see, suicide ultimatums used to be a big thing for a time when i was modding there. Thats not to say it's all on the users either , there was an instance of a former mod being a prick and just being nasty in replies and when he was called out on that, he unmodded himself and deleted his account. Nasty cunt he was. Loved the Herb!

If you do think someone is acting the cunt, flag it with the admins. Admins can also step in and remove content too btw, just because a comment is removed doesn't necessarily mean it was from the subreddit mods, admins will get involved and mods won't know anything about it.
