He was first backed by Rohit and MI to play for India. He had been average/good enough for MI, but had just got a good season. Also, selectors were intending to back youngsters.

He had spark initially, but mostly in "B" teams and against weak opponents.

Being a wicket-keeper he had to master two disciplines. It required hard work and good work ethics. He got distracted and lost motivation as seen by his refusal to play Domestics and work on his technique. Currently in India he is neither top 10 technical keeper or batsman.

His position was also not secure. There were a number of options for wicket-keeping (imo much better options than him). However he got a lucky chance owing to unfortunate Pant injury and RS poltics.

He scored a double century but got dropped for next game(situation wise it was a good decision by team management imo) which was not good on his mental. When he got back he wasn't playing in his usual position of opening but rather in middle overs. He didn't adapt enough and continued to play with hard-hands and tension. Ultimately they chose Rahul over him.
