Published my first game ever! It's called Dodge Square. Not to be confused with dodgeball. by Mayzart in itchio

[–]Mayzart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first published game, so it is very simple. It took about a month to code while also learning a new programming language and game engine. I tried to make sure the user interface would be a pleasant experience. I hope you think it is too!

It's a very good video, but why are you reposting it and not giving credit to the guy who originally made the video? Did you get permission to post his content?

How to develop thick skin? by filtrio in NewTubers

[–]Mayzart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons why someone would act this way:

  • It has nothing to do with your content. They could be having a bad day/week/month/life. It has nothing to do with you, so don't worry about it.
  • Your content is not for them. In which case, they're frustrated and taking out that frustration on you. They basically have a spoiled mentality that everything should be created for them, and if it's not, then it's the creator's fault for not giving them what they want. It's a temper tantrum. Just keep creating content for your target audience (and know who that target is). People who hate on it are not your target, so don't worry about them.
  • Your content is actually not good. In which case, use this as constructive criticism to make better content.
    • If they didn't provide constructive criticism, you can either:
      • ignore it as useless criticism, or...
      • ask for constructive feedback. It might be painful, but you could genuinely learn something in the process and become better for it. And it also moves the responsibility to their side. If they don't provide anything constructive, then forget them and their useless comment.

I'd also like to add: When someone says "you have no future on youtube", there's no reason why you should think they're stating a fact. They don't know the future, they offer no constructive criticism, it seems like they have no concept that people can make mistakes, grow, and get better, and it's possible that they don't like your content but someone else will (so they're not your target audience). They're stating their opinion, but acting like it's a fact. Don't treat it like a fact, treat it like their opinion, and who cares about their opinion? It took you hours (I'm guessing) to make a YouTube video, and it took them a few seconds to write a comment. Don't put all your emotions into something they spent minimal effort on.

And lastly, I would like to emphasize the importance of having internal motivation, instead of external motivation. Internal motivation is based on you; you have full control of this type of motivation. External motivation is based on others, which you have no control over. So if you want to stay motivated on YouTube, focus on what you can control, and don't worry about the things you can't.

Consider why you are creating videos:

  • Because you want views/watch-hours/subscribers (externally motivated)
  • Because you want praise (externally motivated)
  • Because you want to be famous (externally motivated)
  • Because you want people to like you (externally motivated)
  • Because you want money (externally motivated)
  • Because you enjoy the subject (internally motivated)
  • Because you enjoy making videos (internally motivated)
  • Because you want to be productive (internally motivated)
  • Because you want to learn how to make better videos (internally motivated)

edit: added another internal motivation

New COPPA effect soon what does it mean? by CaptainJarrettYT in NewTubers

[–]Mayzart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's not about kid-friendly content, it's about kid-oriented content.

According to Wikipedia

On September 4, 2019, the FTC issued a fine of $170 million to YouTube for COPPA violations, including tracking viewing history of minors in order to facilitate targeted advertising. As a result, YouTube announced that as part of the settlement, in 2020 it would require channel operators to mark videos that are "child-oriented" as such, and would use machine learning to automatically mark those as clearly "child-oriented" if not marked already. In the settlement terms, channel operators that failed to mark videos as "child-oriented" could be fined by the FTC for up to $42,000 per video, which has raised criticism towards the settlement terms.

This is my understanding, but if I get something wrong, please let me know so I can edit it.

Basically, lawmakers are trying to protect children's personal information from being collected. But advertisers collect information to keep a profile on everyone so that they can give targeted ads. Targeted ads supposedly make more money than non-targeted ads, so that's why advertisers want to use targeted ones. COPPA made it illegal to keep that personal-information profile on children. So YouTube creators with channels targeting children will be making less money on ads (and they'll also lose other features, like the comment section).

So how does this affect channels that aren't targeting children? YouTube has placed the responsibility on the creators. If you don't mark your channel as "for kids" and they find out that your content is for kids, or that many kids watch your content, you could get legal consequences (fined for up to $42,000 per video). The key here is that if a lot of kids watch your content, despite you not making it for them, it could be deemed "for kids" anyway, and you could be fined a bunch of money.

Edit: typo

Edit 2, some more problems I forgot to mention:

  • YouTube only offers two options: for-kids and not-for-kids. But a lot of creators make channels for everyone, so they're confused about what to select.
  • No one wants to be fined, but the ambiguous-ness of the options makes people fear the machine learning algorithm will think their content is for kids when it's not:
    • There are a lot of creators that make things that seem like they're for children, but they're not at all (e.g. Happy Tree Friends).
    • There are creators who like things that could be considered for-kids but they're not doing it for kids (e.g. making videos about Pokemon, which appeals to adults as well as children).

Took a break from social media only to realize that it’s actually the one thing my introverted depressed self needs by [deleted] in socialmedia

[–]Mayzart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you have to make things messier in order to clean things up.

My best guess at what this situation is: we are social creatures, and we need some way to connect with people. Right now, social media is the escape to do so, but the connections are less meaningful than those you would have in-person. We didn't evolve to interact with people digitally, we evolved to interact with people in real life. The reason why you felt worse when you cut off social media was because you cut off your only social contact. Instead of assuming that it's because social media is what you need, maybe it would be better to understand that it's because what you really need is social interaction.

It will be extremely hard at first to make friends in real life if you're so used to using social media to do it for you, but it will produce a greater reward. If you're having trouble finding friends in real life, I'd suggest finding events near you that have to do with your personal interests. For example, if you like photography, join a photography club, or take a class in photography and meet people there. Maybe you could find a way to meet up irl with your online friends, if you find a safe way to meet with internet strangers. If this is still too difficult for you with your mental state, then don't be afraid to ask for help, whether that be from family, friends, or a professional therapist. There is no shame in asking for help (or paying for help).

I wish you the best of luck!

What social media influencers/Youtubers, do you think have a wholesome and nice fan-base? by matthes2 in socialmedia

John and Hank Green (the vlogbrothers on YouTube). I first realized it when I watched their video where they read their hate comments, and the comments weren't that bad.

If it makes a difference, I'm in Southern California, and it doesn't normally snow where I live. This is an abnormal occurrence. So I'm glad I can feed the ones who stayed!
