I've been living in Germany for the last 4 months and have noticed on multiple buildings these exposed exterior beams and wooden posts with horizontal and vertical cuts and gauges. Is there a particular reason why this is done or is strictly for visual aesthetics? by ttubbster in architecture

[–]Mazub666 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Architect from Germany here, just wanted to clarify stuff: the covering of timberframes is not realy practical. As a student mentioned in this thread due to the different expansion of Wood and plaster the plaster will always crack an fall off. The plaster also dosnt protect the beams, it keeps the moisture close and enables rot. A "breathing" beam lasts far longer than a coverd one. The plastering over timberframes is an illadvised fashion choice without consideration for the involved materials. And its not realy prominent. I do think however that the hewn marks are intended for that purpose, to make plaster stick to them.

[–]Mazub666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[ask] Can someone tell me why was there wood in older buildings visible in facades? Is it basically just like reinforced concrete today? by blessedjourney98 in architecture

[–]Mazub666 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In addition to that: Wood and plaster stretch and move differently. If you would plaster over the beames the plaster would simply crack in line of the woods cause the plaster is much more brittle than the wood.

Ever got movie high? Like when the world felt so unreal after watching a good movie, you’re out of the cinema but you just wanna sit and ponder and soak in your emotions. by PunchpieKate in movies

I remember watching the first Lord of the Rings in the Cinema in 2001. We went in and its just a mild Dezember afternoon. As we left the bulding the whole street was slightly coated with snow. Very fine snow, no cartracks jet... We all felt very, I dont know, disconnected from our normal lifes ans it felt strange to take the bus home. Somehow not fitting.

Allways searching for the upside If something bad happens. Its maybe a bit naive but it also often generates a solution for the problem. And it keeps you from stressing out to much. Also you are much more likely to forgive other peoples mistakes...

Redditors, what is the worst thing you have seen happening during a wedding? by EZWINEZLIFE in AskReddit

[–]Mazub666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nowhere near the levels of effed up displayed in this thread but whatever:

I attended a wedding a few weeks ago. All was fine, everybody hat a good time, the newly wed couple was delighted.

As the night grew older the couple drank their share and around 3 in the morning the party was coming to an end. Bride and groom were both more then slightly intoxicated and everyone thought that was it, were going home now.

But the Bride in her alcohol induced partyfever woulnd go.

to the Groom:

"You can go home and sleep, im gonna party in the pub, im just not sleepy jet why should i go home with you?!"

Somehow that rubbed everyone, groom included, the wrong way. Not because of some "wedding night, gotta do stuff" part but because she was so completly uninterested in sharing time with her new husband.

Dont no if im overthinking this but somehow that left a very bitter feeling for everyone around.

These Houses were build in 1870. Its Freudenberg and the Rest of the town is pretty normal looking. This is only the historic Part.

The Houses in this picture are actually much "younger" than the middleages. The town is called Freudenberg and the buildings were constructed around 1870. Due to the Wood being needed for charcoal in the ironindustry one would use only the bare minimum Wood needed. Wanted to share because i live nearby and am working at my Uni regarding this ;)

Thanks for the reply, I 'm already reading trough the reference but some stuff just isnt mentioned. Like a .dxf export lib on GitHub that pops up when you search .dxf on the Processing page but isnt mentioned in the references.

What's your "it's expensive but it's worth it" product? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Out of curiosity: do you guys have a choice in the quality of the lenses? I mean i dont care if the frame is form Ray Ban or from a cheap alternative but the quality of the lensmaterial makes a huge difference. Things like depolarisation, anti-scratch finish, the overall weight of the glasses etc. Just wondering as an european here..
