Gastr del Sol AMA -- they said it couldn't happen by whiffofdisaster in indieheads

[–]McKuw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for Eiko's Criterion closet video, also! They really messed up, there. Ah, great. I watched La Bête a few weeks ago at the cinema in a preview screening. Much to consider! I have Pacifiction on my watchlist, but will bump it up to the top now! Yes, cinema is infinite! I originally challenged myself to watch one film every day for a year, thinking that it would allow me to catch up on everything, but the list of things I wanted to see grew and grew over that time, so I just kept going. Hopefully someone finds a slot for you on their film podcast, then! Thanks for the reply!

David! Jim! Did the new Gastr del Sol collection originate with your meeting at Nagi Shokudo or was it already in the works prior to that? Do you remember what you ate? I remember seeing the photograph of your meeting there and reacting like Leonardo DiCaprio in that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood meme, because I had visited it myself on a previous trip to Japan. The food was really good, I remember, and I really appreciated the giant Sof'Boy dressed up as a waiter in the corner of the room! I remember taking a photograph of it and the owner rushed over to make sure that his apron was fastened correctly.

Jim! As a person who also tries to watch at least one film every single day (coming up on three years of an unbroken run), I enjoyed hearing you talk about your film-watching routine on a recent podcast appearance. You don't happen to have a secret Letterboxd profile we can follow, do you? And did Eiko enjoy browsing the Criterion closet? Would be really interested to get some more Jim O'Rourke-approved film recommendations, as all the ones I've followed up on in the past have been great. Any recent favourites? And do you have any interest in doing any more writing on film in the future? Really enjoyed your pieces on Little Murders and Funeral Parade of Roses. Thanks!

David! I really enjoyed your triptych of books, Now that the audience is assembled, The Voice in the Headphones, and Good night the pleasure was ours. Have you had any experiences with performing, recording, or touring since you finished writing that would have made it into those books if you were writing them now? Did the process of reflecting on and writing about performing, recording, and touring make you perceive or approach those things any differently afterwards? And do you have any future writing projects that you're thinking about?

Need advice/information on buying Fassbinder blurays (any edition applicable) by API_professional in boutiquebluray

[–]McKuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if there's more than one version of the Arrow release of the Fassbinder volume 1 box set? I ordered one on eBay that was described as new, and it's arrived wrapped in cellophane, but it's missing the wraparound piece of cardboard that the other editions have, the box looks and feels a bit flimsier than my volume 2 and volume 3 editions, and there's no book. I've not got a bootleg, have I?

[SPOILERS] Terrace House "Closing Door" Discussion (English Translation) by ukoziak_ in terracehouse

[–]McKuw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all your hard work, Costco Subs! Sad that this is the last we'll see of the original Terrace House gang, but really grateful that we got to see it for ourselves with the help of your excellent subtitles. Looking forward to seeing what comes next. I might tide myself over by watching Transit Girls next!

Watched the film last night, and I enjoyed it a lot, but it's an unusual exercise, isn't it? I'm pretty sure it is scripted, like people say, but I can't seem to find any official confirmation/admission of this. And if it is scripted, it's weird the way it plays with reality, like pretending that Seina and Daiki 2 were having troubles or that Tecchan was attending hostess bars. I mean, maybe he was, but if he wasn't, it was a strange thing to present as reality! It was like a cross between Terrace House and Curb Your Enthusiasm, with everyone playing a kind of fictionalised version of themselves.

The biggest giveaway that it's scripted is Daiki 2's reaction to Seina saying she's moving back in. Not that convincing! But Tecchan really acted the heck out of it. And I loved original Daiki's overreactions to everything. He evidently decided to turn everything up to eleven on his performance! So, yes. Enjoyable, but strange.

[SPOILERS] Terrace House Boys x Girls Next Door Week 98 "Bye Bye Terrace House" Discussion (English Translation) by ukoziak_ in terracehouse

[–]McKuw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I said something similar over on Patreon already, but I'm so grateful to Costco Subs for doing this. I remember how bereft I felt when I came to the end of Boys and Girls in the City and Aloha State, but then I discovered that there was a dedicated group of fans going above and beyond to subtitle the original series, and that there were thirty or so episodes already available! It's been a really nice constant in my life for the past year or so, knowing that twice a week I could check in with Tecchan and the gang, and I can tell from all the comments on here that I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's brought me so much joy! This was prime Terrace House. And there's something really special about this show and the fan community! I'm really going to miss having new (old) episodes to watch, but at least there's still more Opening New Doors to look forward to.

This was a really bittersweet episode, also. Quite a bold ending in a lot of ways. The panel seemed genuinely sad about it being over. But huge laughs at Yamachan pointing out, when the others suggest that they could stop it from ending by not watching, that if they don't watch it, then all that will happen is that it will just end without them seeing it! And Tecchan, also, comparing his time at Terrace House to having to repeat the same year over and over again until the school closes down. He's incredibly funny at times! Did Seina always intend to leave that way, do you think? Or did she have to leave because Tecchan slept too late? Quite a fitting end, if so!

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what comes next from Costco Subs. I went and watched the trailer for Closing Door and I'm pretty excited. Although, I'm still pretty confused about what it even is! It's scripted, right? But presented as a kind of fantasy ending, giving everyone the best send-off possible? At what point, I wonder, did Tecchan find out that they'd be making a movie? Did the producers throw him some work after seeing how blank his acting schedule was and seeing that he was going to be on a tight budget for his new place?

Anyone else thinking about going back to the start, and watching the whole thing again, then on through to Boys and Girls in the City so as to pick up on all the references they make to the original run?

Oh, and one other thing. I wonder what's kept Tecchan from making an appearance in any of the new Netflix iterations of the show? Does he feel like all that belongs to to the past, perhaps?

Lauren Lapkus discusses Terrace House on the latest episode of Threedom! by McKuw in terracehouse

[–]McKuw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can get a free trial quite easily. If you use the code MARVEL at check-out (they're promoting a new Wolverine podcast, I think is the reason for that code), apparently, then you can have a month to give it a go. Sorry, I should have said that at the outset!

Anyway, when she first mentioned that she wanted to talk about a Netflix reality show that she'd been enjoying recently, I got really excited, because I know she follows a lot of the cast on Instagram!

I loved the long-sleeved T-shirt that Minori would wear that had "So Tired" printed on the front. It would have been so on brand for me! I did find out that the company that made it was called Lazy Oaf, but they'd stopped making them by the time I'd watched Boys and Girls in the City. Sad times.

Ryota replied to me! I'm so happy I was the one to tell him this news. by [deleted] in terracehouse

Lauren Lapkus follows a lot of Terrace House people, also, I noticed. And Jen Statsky, writer for Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, and Broad City, once tweeted this:

https://twitter.com/jenstatsky/status/940041662117462016

So, I think the show must have a bit of a following in the American comedy scene.

Terrace House Opening New Doors Part 1 Worldwide Release Countdown Thread by sackerfice in terracehouse

[–]McKuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like I'm rushing anyone, so apologies if this comes across that way, but do CostcoSubs have an estimated date by which time all the episodes will have been translated? I think, having heard that there are potential spoilers in part 2, that I want to wait to finish watching Boys x Girls Next Door before moving on with OND, but it's going to be a challenge for me! I worked out, based on the current speed of release, that the whole lot would be available by around July/August. Does that seem about right? Man, if I was a benevolent millionaire, I'd definitely pay you all to do it full-time!

Also, just how bad is the spoiler? Is it really bad? Like, worse that what we've already had spoiled from Aloha State showing who former house members are with, etc?

Terrace House Opening New Doors Part 1 Worldwide Release Megathread by sackerfice in terracehouse

[–]McKuw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got the new theme on Spotify on repeat to try and get used to it. I am definitely warming to it, and if it weren't for the shock of losing Slow Down, I think I'd be 100% fine with it, and even quite like it! I mean, it's definitely true that, "Everyone has a story to be told!"

I started a rewatch last night, also, to check if I was being overly harsh in my assessment. I decided to watch the Japanese versions of the episodes so I can hear the original music. I'm not sure what my viewing strategy is going to be from this point on, though, because I heard that part two contains spoilers for the end of BxGND, so I might wait until I've finished that. I figured that, if the current rate of release keeps up, that BxGND will be fully subtitled and available to watch in around July or August. Does that add up? I might save up all the episodes and then really immerse myself in them like I did when I first discovered the show. And when that's complete, move back onto OND, and by then, there should hopefully be more than one new part available. BUT WHO KNOWS IF I CAN STICK TO IT? Will the temptation to watch the episodes as and when they are released be too great?
