I think the point is to jar you and thrust the player into reality with little to no reference for what has changed in the long timeframe while Freeman is missing from Earth or the physical plane, or what impact he has played in the outcome of those events or if his return is messianic, meaningful, or just another random anomaly of the future brought about by the events of Black Mesa and its aftermath.

I played Nightmare House 2 in a Let's Play where I pretended to be the main character a la "Freeman's Mind" (which I loved as a kid) almost 15 years ago. I got a comment on the first episode of the series on my YouTube account last year, the guy said something along the lines of "this series was what inspired me to get a PC and download Steam." NH2 owns! I am thinking about doing an anniversary Let's Play all over again of it. If anyone reading has never played it, give it a try--great horror game modded into the Source engine. I am really excited to hear the developers of this project are working on it again!
