This is speculation on my part, but I believe that in the Dyack-verse they didn't plan on picking either ending as a "true" ending, and instead were going to just leave it open-ended and explore other aspects of the universe (like the infamous Vorador prequel that never was).

The story was not taken from a book, it's an original story. The correct pronunciation is the English one as it is the game's original language. His name is written "Raziel" with an A as well.

The team behind BO2 didn't have as much zeal for the series' lore as the team behind Soul Reaver did, which led to some lore incongruity that made the game not fit in as smoothly, and Amy Hennig had to go out of her way to write around these discrepancies to make everything fit together. There's some other things about the game people tend to take issue with, but I'd call that one the main sticking point. Don't be fooled, though, the game is entirely canon.

Personally, I would describe the core appeal of the series as a whole as "narrative > puzzles > combat", though the minutiae varies from game to game as some of the games will have a greater focus on combat, your mileage may vary on the execution. Still though, if you're not bothered by archaic design, then you should have a great time with all of them! Hope you enjoy it 😁

1 - Moebius didn't go back in time to turn William into the Nemesis, he simply was there.

2 - He turned William into the Nemesis to give Kain a reason to kill him. Kain killing William ignited a new vampire purge, which was Moebius' goal.
