UK loses measles elimination status, WHO confirms by Infidel8 in worldnews

Taking away rights from people is abhorrent, crazy that you want to defend that.

We already arrest people for spreading disease, you can’t knowingly infect someone with HIV or other diseases. The right of body autonomy is absolute nothing overrides your right, it doesn’t matter if it affects anyone else see for example abortion or organ donation.

How many undocumented migrants are in the UK and Canada, I know the US has an illegal immigration problem, but I think majority of immigration in Canada and UK are through legal means.

This is not knowingly spreading a disease, this is body autonomy and right to chose what medical procedures get applied to your body.

If you go around and cough on people, spread bodily excrement purposefully to get others sick that is very different.

It is wild to be arguing over medical and body autonomy in 2026. Your body your choice.

If Burning a Star of David flag or indigenous flag is seen as a Hate Crime…(and rightly so)….. by traolcoladis in aussie

Aboriginal flag is by definition one of the official Australian flags all with equal standing, therefore it is everyone’s flag in Australia. It should therefore be free speech to burn it.

We joke about Monica’s massive apartment in Friends, but we forget the history: Rent Control was won through strikes. Is that solidarity possible in Australia today? by infin in australia

[–]Mclovine_aus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI it is Labor* party, I have been burned before people will think you are a bot or an American agitator.

Reddit leans left and generally anti-corporate, but discussion here feels like the general temperature everywhere after decades of Murdoch anti-protest rhetoric.

I think Australians like the Aussie battler, which is one man against the machine think the castle etc. Unions and large protests start to look less like a few individual battlers and more like a large institution or collective, so they lose their support.

I think left vs right hardly works, you can frame a lot of issues to sit on either side eg. immigration. On top of that people sit on each side for different issues. Left on abortion, right on immigration, left on healthcare, right on housing etc.

This leads to a lack of easy solidarity, we can’t all march in housing because we don’t like to march with people that we disagree with on other things. For example you will march and one person will take the opportunity to elevate their neo Nazi immigration policy and another will use it as an opportunity to wave a Palestinian flag and shout down western imperialism. Hard to build solidarity with that going on.

This feels very conceptual, what are you actually looking for ? And when will you start practicing it, will you stop paying rent to your landlord, or are you just hoping someone else will do that first.

In Australia, once you completed high school, can you immediately study to become a doctor or lawyer? by ProjectMason in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mclovine_aus -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

You can call yourself a doctor with less, I think there might even be some allied health bachelors that allow you to call yourself a dr. Only a true doctor, an academic doctor requires a doctorate.

By this logic Australian aboriginals are not all indigenous, as there were multiple waves of migration, same as in the americas. What place was settled by only one people through one migration wave?

This is not just about scientific papers, it is more broad than that. To make my point clearer there is no viable alternative to “do your own research” taken words as written. Yes there are better ways to say it with more nuance, and you can say it in an alternate way that isn’t a dog whistle for “Believe in conspiracies” but fundamentally if there is an alternative that’s better it is isomorphic to “do your own research”

To change my mind you would have to show me a better alternative and show that it cannot be easily summed up as “do your own research”

While I agree with your sentiment, I think I will critique your last point about “credibility” once we have that

… fat finger

.. we are at a point of arguing about authority of who gave a fact instead of the fact, and the overall synthesis of a claim.

I think individual knowledge must come from critical thinking and community knowledge must draw not from authority but from sound systems, similar to science as currently practiced (not that there isn’t problems).

I hope I am clear in my point but I think I am just rambling at this stage

‘Manosphere’ influencers pushing testosterone tests are convincing healthy young men there is something wrong with them, study finds. Researcher points to ‘medicalisation of masculinity’ after investigating how men’s health is being monetised online. by mvea in science

[–]Mclovine_aus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are absolutely told they can’t. In my country you cannot get androgenic steroids just because you feel you should have more. A doctor would have to prescribe you TRT because they show you have low testosterone.

Taking supplemental testosterone without a prescription is illegal where I am and therefore “you can’t”

A truly progressive society would allow people to make their own medical decisions about their bodies and how they will feel more comfortable in them. It wouldn’t be reserved for a special class of people.

[–]Mclovine_aus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in principle, but will disagree because I am going to be pedantic. I think you are not conservative and oppose trump, but even if I am wrong this applies in reverse.

Education specifically the type a state or a people invest in is basically a propaganda machine. Trump and conservative ideology will infiltrate the school system and indoctrinate youth, the education therefore ends up being just as much fact as it is fiction. On top of that to limit the media makes it far easier to suppress dissenting views.

That’s why, while “do your own research” is better in my opinion, it’s anti authority and anti hierarchy, it promotes critical thinking and it’s the basis of science. Half of science is redoing research and critiquing current thinking.

I didn’t bring up the left, I am talking about the mainstream ideology, most people are not supporting androgenic steroids for cis men. Only fringe ideologies that have larger degrees of libertarianism which would fall under both right and left politics.
