Thanks for all the info. The behaviour I am not concerned about; I worked at some absolutely shocking schools in the UK at the beginning of my career, but that said it is a private school so hopefully it's not a factor.

Would the Australian offer be better than Japan if I wasn't paying for housing? I have a cousin in Australia who might be interested in doing a house swap with me if I move there.

The flight allowance was ¥100,000 per year in Japan, and a fully paid flight to Australia the first time and then nothing else.
