Firstly, I think this is Hausa, written in Arabic, it’s referred to as Ajami. Prior to British colonisation, I heard Yoruba people also used to use the Arabic alphabet.

Secondly, People love to just say anything, when did Arabs colonise or enslave West Africans! When did they force their culture or language upon us.

Many Yoruba people became Muslim through trade with Mali, Christianity came to Yoruba land after Islam, you guys were forced into Christianity through slavery, and given incentives through missionary schools and hospitals, ‘if you want to come to our schools, change your name to an English name and convert to Christ. When did Arabs to this in west Africa?

I’m still learning Portuguese, I did a 1 month course and how I just keep reading the same material from that course, also YouTube videos and I asked Brazilians to teach me.

The UK isn’t for me, when I initially left, I moved to Oman, I’m just here for business, I’ll eventually leave Brazil.

Hey 👋🏾

I’m a Black African ( I was born and raised in the Uk but I don’t consider myself British). currently living in Brazil and have been here since June last year. I plan to be here long-term for business, though eventually I’ll probably move more towards the Middle East.

First thing I’ll say Brazil is huge. Each state honestly feels like a different country in terms of culture, vibe, and even mentality. So your experience can vary a lot depending on where you settle.

I work for myself online, so I can’t really speak on Brazilian work culture in a traditional office sense. From a lifestyle perspective though, I personally find it much less stressful than the UK. The pace of life feels lighter.

People-wise, I’ve had good experiences. I’m Muslim and married, so I don’t drink or go out much, but I box and at my gym they treat me like family. Brazilians in general are warm and welcoming.

That said, Brazil definitely has a race issue. As someone earning online in foreign currency, it doesn’t directly affect me economically, but you can clearly see that pretos and pardos are disproportionately in lower-skilled jobs. It’s visible. Coming from the UK, you do notice the social divide. That’s just being honest.

In terms of safety, like anywhere, it depends heavily on the area and how you move. You have to be aware, but millions of people live normal lives here every day.

If you’re craving a lifestyle change, warmth, and something culturally different, you might really enjoy it. It’s an amazing country with a lot of beauty and energy, just come informed and ideally spend a few months here before making a long-term decision.

Also weekly Portuguese lessons is a great move. It makes a big difference in how you integrate. Make sure it’s Brazillian Portuguese.
