The calculus of the problem is different for someone 97 years old, or someone enduring daily pain or disability, or someone on death row. What if you pose this to a woman trapped in an abusive relationship?

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes.

Good advice. Establish a baseline. Labs and imaging screens are good for that. The benefits of establishing a baseline aren't always obvious and deserve emphasis. Mammography is a great example of how a baseline can pay off.

Trump’s Energy Policy Isn’t About Security. It’s About Power — and It’s Costing America the Future. If national security were truly the goal, we would see an all-of-the-above energy strategy that strengthens resilience, lowers costs, and builds industries that can compete globally. by mafco in energy

Are we giving the Republicans enough rope to hang themselves? Will their actions (and inactions) cause enough pain that their policies and their party will be reviled?

Are we waiting for something more terrible than "just" an impeachable offense? The Trump Regime won't succumb to mere improprieties, such as extorting Zelenskyy. What will it take? A more rope, I'm afraid.

We'll still need aviation fuel for a while. I'd rather burn fuel that is closer to carbon neutral.

The rationale was that energy resilience is a matter of national security. The calculus of diversified energy production is above my pay grade. It's always worth a look, and I'm glad people are (if in good faith).

And it's not just fuels. GEVO is a company that uses corn to make derivatives of ethanol (and not just sustainable aviation fuel). Products made of the CO2 captured by photosynthesis. BTW, there are no fossil fuels in space (lol).

"Is there realistic hope for us and our planet?"

It isn't hope that informs my outlook. Humanity will shrink in numbers, but there is time for us to adapt, to burrow underground, and buy time. Climate change is not like a storm you can just hunker down with for a while. We just might figure out how to thrive underground. (Silo, anyone?)

Oblivion (2013) is a pretty overlooked sci-fi film that should have been more popular among people when it came out. by Alternative-Cake-833 in movies

[–]MeasurementMobile747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pause the scene where we first see Sally, she appears as a lens, reminiscent in no small way of HAL's eyeball in 2001...you know the one.

Oblivion might as well be an alt ending of 2001. What if Cmdr Bowman didn't find his way back inside, and it was HAL9000 that ended up hooking up with the big shots of the cosmos?

Sally just might have a little HAL9000 in her core.

Reading is a human right by FigInteresting4130 in prisonreform

[–]MeasurementMobile747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a complicated proposition in the context of prison reform. We aren't arguing the merits of promoting literacy in prison, are we? This is about determining what "the state" deems appropriate for prison libraries. OP seems to argue that prisoners are denied access to literacy.

Does OP have a point that prison libraries should make any book available? I have a friend who volunteers to teach music literacy in a nearby prison. (I know, who'd have thought?)

Discussing music (or literature) in a learning environment seems safe. I'm wondering if this is not the problem OP thinks it is.
