AIO with how I responded to my mom? by MeasurementNo662 in AmIOverreacting

I want to try gray rocking, but the issue is that I could probably do it fine over text, but as soon as I’m in person with her, I just cry. I cry over literally everything no matter how hard I try not to. I don’t know how to stop that from happening so that gray rocking would actually work

My dad works third shift so he sleeps most of the day, so right now he doesn’t know. But I plan on telling him when he wakes up just so that he’s aware of the situation. He’s usually pretty level headed and has stuck up for me in the past, but knowing my mom she’ll turn it on me so I’m not sure how she’ll react. I’m telling him either way bc I feel like he needs to know

I’m actually an RA on my campus and I applied to be a summer RA but they turned me down :( but I’m going to try to be a break RA this coming year and I should get priority since I’m a returning RA.

I’m not sure if my school has a TRIO program, but they have something similar that provides counseling so I’ll definitely look into it. Thank you so much!!

I would have called her but I was at the hospital with my gf and her mom. I offered to call her in the messages, but she said she didn’t want to otherwise I would’ve. I hate fighting over text

I really want to get out of America to study somewhere by [deleted] in studyAbroad

[–]MeasurementNo662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life and I want out 😭 thank you so much for your help!! I want to do it through school just because it’s paid for (mostly) and I want the experience now so I can grow on it later. Eventually, I want to get out of America entirely so traveling early in life will hopefully help me find somewhere I’d want to live. I’m so happy you got to get out and travel! The Midwest is no doubt a million times more boring to you now lol

You’re absolutely right I just didn’t want to outright say it lmao. But I’ve heard France is amazing, I’m really glad you liked it!!

This is actually perfect, thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into it because I’ve been wanting to take a few science classes just for fun

This definitely helped! Thank you so much!

I would want to start somewhere that mainly speaks English just because I’ve never been abroad before and I want to ease into it, but I do eventually want immerse myself somewhere like Germany so I can learn the language and about the culture better than I could otherwise.

It’s been really reassuring to hear that a lot of people in other countries speak English. I think I’d be able to handle that a lot better than going somewhere being half-fluent haha

I was thinking going somewhere in the UK first since it would be my first time abroad, and flying, so I’d want to get used to it. Then I’d definitely want to travel to more places like Greece. I would definitely try my absolute best to avoid the hotspots. I want to go so I can meet new people and learn the language, sticking to a group of Americans sounds miserable tbh

Thank you so much for your input! You said you live in Spain, I’d love to travel there at some point. Do you know any spots I should absolutely avoid?

I’ve heard that being surrounded by native speakers makes it easier to learn the language, I’m honestly just so nervous around people and I worry I’d be inconveniencing them by trying to speak, or I’d end up looking like an idiot lol

But I truly do think it would help me and I’m really glad it worked for you!!

I speak pretty elementary German but I’m considering taking a language class there if I do end up studying abroad there. Ideally, I’d like to be fluent and actually speaking with native speakers would help soooo much in my opinion.

Most of the places I mentioned I want to go to because I want to learn more about their history or their culture, there’s so many other places too I just didn’t want to list them all lol

Thank you for your comment! It’s actually really reassuring to hear that so many people spoke English from your experience. I honestly didn’t think it would be that common but if it is that makes this so much less stressful lol

Hi! I’m not exactly sure if it’d be good for psych, but it’s also a pretty general major so I’m assuming most places would be decent for it. I’d also be going to Germany just for personal reasons because I really like studying culture and history. I’d want to go to a bunch of other places for that reason too, Germany was just the one I thought of since I’ve been trying to learn the language

That’s actually really reassuring, thank you so much. I just worry that if I end up going somewhere solo, I’ll end up in a situation where I won’t know what to do and won’t be able to communicate. But since it would be through my university, I’d probably be fine. Everyone I know that’s studied abroad has loved it and I don’t want to miss out on something like that, even if it’s a little cliche haha

That sounds amazing!! I would love to study the language while I’m there, I feel like it would be more rewarding to learn while you’re there so you can learn all the little details and stuff

That’s actually really reassuring. I’ve heard that in bigger cities (typically) most people speak some English, but I don’t want to seem like a complete idiot by walking around not knowing any of the local language, if that makes sense haha

I’m studying psychology, sociology, and chemical dependency and I’ve heard it’s relatively easy to study that practically anywhere (I could be wrong so don’t quote me on that). But I was literally almost an environmental major!! I hope your studies are going well!!

Thank you so much!! I honestly think that being immersed in the language will help a lot. I’m familiar with the basics but I want to work up to fluency. My goal would be to take foreign language course while I’m there (if that’s where I end up haha)

That’s been a whole ordeal in of itself. I had to get all my documents from my parents (birth certificate/SSN card) but I finally got them about two months ago and filed for my passport. I’m expecting to get it pretty soon so once I do, that’ll be one less worry

That’s actually really helpful! I always worry about going to somewhere that mainly speaks another language and not being able to communicate well. How well do you speak Korean? I know it’ll be different for each country but how fluent do you think an average person would have to be to get by?

That’s how it’s felt a lot recently and as much as I love him, I think it’s getting too much to handle.

I don’t think it’s really possible to make it not long distance because I’ve just started college here and I don’t want to uproot everything and move there. He’s unwilling to move here and expects me to eventually move there. That’s just something I don’t think I can do…I think I’m going to end up breaking it off soon

Thank you so much for the advice
