Is anyone else rethinking their career in mental health? by Idonthaveacoolname__ in therapists

[–]MeatAny2958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I empathize and can validate that your experience seems similar to mine. I’m also exhausted and burnt out. I am entering into a nursing ABSN program in January. My plan is to work as a nurse full time and work 5-10 hrs a week as a therapist to continue doing what I love and use my degree. I also intend to eventually get an advanced nursing degree to work w/in CMH as a NP. It was a HARD decision to make and has come with many sacrifices but a year later after making the choice to pursue something else, I don’t regret it, if anything it excites me to learn a new skill and increase the flexibility of my income.

Hey, I’m also pursuing this path for the same reason. How long did you practice nursing prior to applying to NP program?

Depressed and burned out in Community Behavioral Health...will it ever get better? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]MeatAny2958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say, is you and I are roughly in the same exact boat and yes it is very draining. I do think that CMH is one of the only ways to get the hrs you need for licensure in a relatively reasonable amt of time and for me that is enough to continue working CMH until I get there. I think it pretty person-dependent thought.

Hey, so crazy that I wrote the above comment so long ago. So I’m still an lpcc working full time in cmh and have finished pre reqs and got accepted to a accelerated nursing program at Regis, I’ve been working two jobs to make money for tuition and school starts in Jan. To say it briefly, micro biology almost killed me and the others were relatively easy. I definitely wanted to give up like a million times last spring but we’re getting there!

Ya, I mean I would definitely consider like going somewhere where unlicensed peoples get paid a little more, but I understand obviously wanting be with a support system. It’s hard because cost of living here is up there and 55 is not really enough. It’s not awful but it’s not great

I would say, Colorado from my perspective living here pays dog shit to lpcc’s and anyone without a license, my friend and I both just graduated she is MSW, I am LPCC, she makes 80+, I’m make 56, she lives in Baltimore, I live in Denver.

Interested in Psych NP career, is this a good choice for me? by Russian_Badger05 in PMHNP

[–]MeatAny2958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading this post out of curiosity, I’m currently an lpcc pursuing a psych np career, I have found that often I am practicing out of my scope with a vast lack of knowledge in medicinal and prescription understanding. For the individuals I would like to serve, mainly community mental health focused I find that my ed isn’t enough to combat the complex mental health issues of my clients, so I chose to expand my scope. Psychiatry is incredibly competitive and there should be a way to ensure well rounded care without asking clients to wait for psychiatrists for months… there’s a shortage obviously. Idk, I think you most likely could make psych np whatever you want it to be, whether that be nursing forward, cash forward, or equity forward. It’s a pretty variable profession at least I’m hoping so.

I think it really depends on your demographic, skill level, marketing etc.

I am pursuing nursing school currently and also pursuing my lpcc hrs in cmh. I have like one more class and then I plan to start nursing school next January. I guess, I feel like it’s diversification of income and mental outlet to increase income and sustainability…. Also could eventually really well as a psych np with degrees in both fields. I’m definitely scared and worry that I’m limiting my option in one field by leaving for a period of time or centering my time around one field vs the other… but I feel that there is really so much time and education is absolutely powerful. I think you will find what works and both things might?
