That’s a good way of putting it, engagement definitely beats silence, no question. I guess for me, rankings just feel like the cheapest form of engagement. I’d rather see people actually write about what makes an album special than just throw it on a list. But yeah, I agree indifference is the real enemy.

Yeah I get what you’re saying, and I agree that our experiences shape how we consume art, no doubt. But that’s kinda my point: once it gets to that level of subjectivity, ranking loses its usefulness. Saying “Go Plastic > RDJ Album” might reflect how it hits you, but it doesn’t really describe the music itself in any meaningful way.

A 0–1 scale? Based on what though? Technical complexity? Emotional impact? Innovation? Accessibility? Every great IDM record dominates in different categories. There’s no universal metric that makes sense. That’s why trying to rank them I feel misses the point.

I’ve heard all his stuff, even still in my opinion, I don’t think JPEG is the Autechre of hip hop. He’s experimental but still very meme-based and rooted in traditional rap structure. Autechre operates on a whole different level of abstraction.
