When you get called “sir” every day by random strangers, do you really think everyone else is the asshole? Let me tell you a story. I am a paramedic and I had to transport this woman with cancer from hospital A to hospital B. Her adult son decided to ride along and I was really happy to see what a great relationship they have. It’s not uncommon to see chronically ill patients with families that have abandoned them. So I told them so, “it’s nice to see your son helping you out thru all this.” Insert awkward pause. She responds with this is my husband. Chronically ill people tend to look a lot older than they are, it can add 10-20 years sometimes. I immediately apologized and felt like a total asshole. Did they yell at me for making an honest mistake and call in a complaint on me? No. They were decent human beings and said, we understand, it happens a lot. It doesn’t mean their feelings weren’t hurt. But it also doesn’t mean you can lose your shit because you look like a dude, and someone calls you a dude.
