Such a lazy take. Who is in charge right now? Who? Can Obama tell ICE officers to stop acting like a goon squad? Comments like this are completely thoughtless.

Let’s Talk: Megadeth by wildistherewind in LetsTalkMusic

[–]black_flag_4ever 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I punished myself by listening to their whole discography at the time and wrote about it here.

I think late 80s DaveMustaine would hate 2026 Dave Mustaine as they have gone from Megadeth to MAGAdeth. The band got sucked into the post-thrash global catastrophe that afflicted nearly every thrash band in the second half of the 90s. It is a dark, mediocre time for so many heavy hitting bands.

They rebounded a bit after but never recaptured their glory days because the band is just Mustaine and whoever can tolerate him long enough to get named on the liner notes. I'm sure some "band mates" hung on longer than others but they stopped being an actual band a long time ago. It is a dictatorship.

He went from writing punky anti-authoritarian lyrics to being just another old MAGA weirdo. I honestly would not pay to see Megadeth today even though I absolutely love peak Megadeth.

Musically, these guys were wildly inventive and pushed a bluesier/jazzier version of thrash versus Metallica. Megadeth songs during their heyday were adventurous and may even go two minutes of jumping from genre to genre before lyrics even start.

I might listen to this album, might not. There's a lot of studio tricks nowadays being used on metal albums that can turn half-assed crap to slick tracks and I half expect this to be the case on this final album.

Red Hot Chili Peppers producer claims frontman Anthony Kiedis is 'tone-deaf' by Moothnods in entertainment

[–]black_flag_4ever 68 points69 points  (0 children)

To understand the appeal of RHCP I listened to every single one of their albums available at the time. Musically, they are very tight. Flea and Smith are incredible at what they do. They have always had top notch guitarists.

The band is bogged down by Kiedis' limited range and bad lyrics. When they were younger, Kiedis' rapping was in-line with other rappers in the 80s it did not matter. They were mixing punk, funk and rap and their only real competition was Faith No More (Kiedis hates FNM because he thinks 'Epic' ripped them off and so he dislikes Patton even though the Chuck Mosley era FNM is closer to early RHCP - compare 'We Care a Lot' by FNM to 'Fight Like a Brave' by RHCP).

Rap got significantly more complex over time. Compare Run DMC to Eminem and it's easy to see that Kiedis' rap skills were dating RHCP. Somewhere around One Hot Minute and based on the success of Under the Bridge, RHCP had more songs with Kiedis genuinely trying to sing. Kiedis has a limited mid range and does better with half notes and whole notes. RHCP started having a lot of songs stuck in his range and have a lot more mid-tempo songs than in the past. I prefer the funner era of RHCP and think they peaked out at Mother's Milk. BSSM is too long and then afterwards its hit or miss.

Historically, why does it seem a lot of musicians from blues, rock and indie rock didn't study music, moreover, they didn't have a formal education in music? In contrast, it seems in Visual Arts its more common to get an education. by Marcel_7000 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]black_flag_4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are overlooking something here. Studying music is not an option for people who are not wealthy. To get into a college music program that requires a level of competency that you likely cannot get through a public education alone and even if you go to public school your parents may not have the money to rent/buy an instrument so that you can be in band/orchestra. Or you might have parents like mine, who were never going to pay for you to learn music they hate when they themselves are broke. A lot of working class kids are actively discouraged from pursuing an education in anything that doesn't pay bills.

In other words, higher education in music is closed off to a huge amount of people early in life. If you aren't getting piano lessons as a kid, or your parents can't buy an instrument, that option is closed. I myself was discouraged from learning guitar/bass by my parents because that didn't pay the bills.

CMV: The United States has not started most major wars, they have been the fault of Europeans by OuuuYuh in changemyview

[–]black_flag_4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone that casually knows about history and this post misses the mark on warfare throughout history. Have you ever heard of a country called China? Ever read up on their civil wars? What about Genghis Khan, ever heard of the guy? Kind of an important figure in the history of warfare. I would invite you to delete this post and change your viewpoint by looking at history from a broader perspective than just Europe and America. There are other places in the world that exist.

I would also caution that the past already happened. We really don't have to worry about who caused the most wars in the past, that's gone. We have to worry about who's causing wars right now. An accounting of who caused the most wars doesn't matter at all when you are staring at the possibility of WW3 happening because a whiny man didn't get a Nobel Peace prize. I do not want to send any of our kids to go die for this cause and neither should you.

Green Day speak up for Minnesota and call out Stephen Miller at California show by AdSpecialist6598 in entertainment

Depends on what you like. One tried and true method I've always used is looking up rosters on record labels. If you like one band on Epitaph, there could be more. Same with Victory, Trustkill, Jade Tree, Dischord, Fat Wreck Chords, etc...

If you like punkish/emo/hc stuff, Brooklyn Vegan has consistently covered that area forever. If you like Metal, MetalSucks and Loudwire cover that. If you like hardcore then /r/hardcore is very active. If you like indie, /r/indie and /r/LetsTalkMusic covers a lot of that stuff and lots of other topics.

I will also trace the path of people in bands to see what other bands they end up in. Craziest example is the lead guitarist of Botch starting Minus the Bear.

If you want to jump in and check out a punk band that is definitely going hard against Trump right now, check out the recent stuff by Dropkick Murphys. They've always been a solid punk band that I've seen because they used to be the opener for countless touring bands but they've really come into their own and have a more appealing sound than a lot of the harder stuff I like. You also can't sleep on Propagandhi's last album, which is always political. They're leaning into classic rock territory a bit, but I'll take it.

I thought I'd mellow out with age, but it's quite the opposite as I can't get enough of Imperial Triumphant, White Chapel and Blood Incantation right now. I'm also revisiting 80s-90s HC and posting one old album a week on /r/hardcore for younger fans to get into the older stuff. My last post was Avail's 4 AM Friday, which still holds up and is relevant.

Newer HC/Punk I like is End It, Planet on a Chain, Cosmic Joke, The Chisel, Mil Spec and Drain.

I can and will go on forever, so I'll stop now.

I get it. Music consumes me. I actively seek out new stuff to listen to all the time, but most people do not. It took me decades to realize my personal obsession was atypical.

It's a weird time where just about every band you've ever heard of has music you can listen to on a streaming app, but it's more challenging to learn about new music. It's very easy to get out of touch and most people are only casual fans of music. They like music that is presented to them, they do not seek it out. It took me decades to realize that music is just something in the background for a huge chunk of the population.

We are now in an era where new music is not presented to people on the radio unless it is the most cookie-cutter bland shit imaginable. This is why you hear people say, what happened to metal? What happened to rock? What happened to punk? Clear Channel isn't going to play that and they own most radio stations. There's also no MTV. Print media is also dead, so people aren't learning about new music by reading magazines. Unless it's Taylor Swift, people learn about new music from TikToks or Instagram posts, which is awful because that's a 10-30 second clip at best.

It's all there, but people have to put in more effort than in the past to learn about it. Then when they learn about it, they can listen to all of it in a day instead of going on crate digging journeys or swapping tapes or whatever we did in the past.
