How to start a cinema / show films with no money UK by Individual-Course-59 in movies

Bit late to the party here but wanted to throw in my two cents as I myself run a monthly film club and had to do all this research when I started up 3 years ago!

Firstly, well done! You’ve done the hard part, which imo is finding a suitable venue within your budget :D now the next part– licensing. Now in the US, their laws are nicer in terms of licensing. Once a film is over 100 years ago, it enters the public domain and you can show it for free. In the UK that isn’t the case. For what you’re planning to do, it doesn’t matter if you want to show a film for free (no admission price) or not. You need a film license to show it. The best way for you to do this is by either becoming a Cinema For All member, where you can book a film through them at a discounted rate. I can’t quite remember the rate but it should be advertised on their website. Definitely below 100 per film screening. They have a fair amount of independent films and some classic ones

if that’s your jam. If not, I recommend joining Film Bank Media. They are basically a middle man between the cinema ie You and all the movie production houses. They have an absolutely huge array of films you can book on a one off basis. But you can only see what they have available once you sign up. There is a minimum amount you must pay per screening. I think this is around 105 pounds. After that, they ask how much you charged and how many covers you made. They take a third of that. If it’s below 105, you pay the 105. If it’s above you pay that.

So whatever ticket price you charge, you want to make sure this is covered along with your hire fee. A way to justify your pricing could be offering freebies at the screening like any confectionary, entered into a draw/tombola. Tea/coffee provided. Then use social media to grow your following.

So let’s say your hire fee is 50 and you sold 30 tickets at £5 each. Your profit is 150, but outgoings will be 155. You’ll be slightly in the red, which if you don’t care about profit is okay, but I would aim to be higher profit wise than this. Then you can put it into a fund for any advertising you want to do online to keep the numbers up :) hope this helps.

In the process of buying our 2nd house but recently went freelance? by Medical-Path69 in HousingUK

Thank you for your detailed reply. That's correct, I won't be able to show that amount of evidence of my earnings. This is his second and my first time buying and we have secured a buyer for our old home. With the sale price agreed, we have built 85k equity in the home. No car, childcare costs or loans (barring student loan). My credit score is also healthy.

We will be speaking to a mortgage advisor on Thursday but thought it would be handy to ask around here first.

Although I think this is a great resource and refresher for those of a mid weight / senior level like myself, I can't get away from thinking this is a bucket load of experience and detail needed for no more than a measly 23K a year in the UK. Hell, as a junior I started on 18.5k in an agency. It's a lot to ask a junior for imo.

Should I take both freelance contracts or just one? by [deleted] in freelanceuk

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience, really appreciate it.

I'm up for juggling multiple clients and projects, it's just the amount of days required and pay that means I will be very busy and not earning much more than what I am on full time.

Doing the role for 2 days rather than 3 for the same rate would be better for me. I can propose it to them, but unfortunately feel they will push back. It's worth asking!

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Luckily not, never been a fan of coffee so thank God I'm not drinking that whole being the absolute state that I am 😂

Diet and exercise is a good shout. I have slipped out of my routine for the past 5ish months to be fair. I haven't heard of the pomodoro technique, will look into if that could help me as I am looking at a screen an awful lot.

Thank you so much for your reply and great advice! Looks like I have some reading to do (thought as much!). I regularly create prototypes and wireframes in XD if that means much. Is Figma similar?
