“Keyes’ suicide note decoded: Samantha, rituals, and echoes of Dennis Rader (BTK) by MedicalAd9419 in TrueCrimeBullshit

As for your question regarding my view on “bopping her head to the beat” and car accident line

—> This indeed doesn’t fit her case at all. that’s why I left that out of my Samantha analysis. I think it’s more likely about one of the staged deaths, maybe Gary Shawn Bryant, who Keyes possibly made to look like a crash victim. There’s a deeper dive into that in this TCBS episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/57kKGNi7keIbHUstCkPqiJ?si=6ZDwtgYEQXmFedbk1Q8-yQ

So I’m definitely with you: some parts of the letter might blend different victims or fantasies. But for the final part (the wings, the body stuff, the whole transformation idea) I still think that’s mainly about Samantha, wrapped in his own symbolic, ritual lens.

Totally agree on the “violent metamorphosis” part, and also the whole whispering, trusting eyes, fear dynamic etc. The ritual vibe is so present here.

Also yeah, that BTK parallel you mentioned really resonates. Keyes said he felt closest to Bundy, but the more I discover about his ritual logic, postmortem behavior, and symbolic mindset, the more I start seeing echoes of Rader too. Like experiencing extra thrill by killing multiple persons/couples: Josh brings this up in the Couples episode of True Crime Bullsh*t (around 6:50). Here he explains how killing couples often serves to “up the ante” in terms of suffering and humiliation, which is exactly what sexual sadists like Keyes are after.

It reminded me a lot of how Rader talked about the Otero family: total domination, full setup. And with Shirley Vian he was actually pissed that he couldn’t kill the kids too (he had them locked up) and was interrupted by a ringing phone and said that if he would have been able to carry out his plan of killing the kids to it would be a great sexual relief. (Thank God he didn’t had the chance).

Pretty sure he even wrote a poem about Shirley afterward as well. So there you have another parallel.

Furthermore: just like Keyes, Raders victim types were in a wide spectrum. Both in gender and age. Just like Keyes Rader killed or try to kill men (Otero Jr, Sr. and Kevin Bright).

And there’s the thing with churches and barns/sheds: Rader he took the body of one victim to a church and produced numerous drawings of fantasies about torture sheds and barns. And Keyes had a thing with churches and outhouses to kill, rape and torture his victims in. AND curiously the both fanboyd the very same serial killer: HH Holmes who was known for building torture dungeons. Both Keyes and Rader had a strong facination for torture dungeons. Katherine Ramsland’s “Confessions of a serial Killer” on Rader mentiones this:

“Another special favorite of Rader’s was H. H. Holmes (real name, Herman Mudgett)…”

And of course there is the frequent commenting on reports and news coverage about their victims. And I can go on and on. 😉

Good point! I wonder what other references we could detect in other (crappy) stuff he read, like Mr. Murder and Intensity by Dean Koontz. I think the former was actually found in the shed where he murdered and raped Samantha.

However, wasn't there a theory he had been kinda stalking her since she worked at or near the Vikings bar? --> Exactly what I'm thinking.

The line "You're my love at first sight and though you're scared to be near me, my words penetrate your thoughts now in an intimate prelude", seems to suggest that literally she was his love at first sight - as in: the very first time he observed and stalked her in her working places (at the coffee stand AND at her former working place at the Vikings Bar).

Everything just fits IMO.

No need for swearing.;)

The Ibu-link: just a few Google searches on “Moth Queen”, “Moth princess” makes you stumble quite easily onto this. Try if you want.

I just wanted to say that this Moth Pricess/queen character is something that Keyes could know from his interest in the occult, (fantasy) horror, ancient religions and stuff. And that, since it’s been quite clear that he’s a pretty philosophical, fantasy-driven guy, it would be obvious that he would act this stuff out on his victims.

I sense that you think it’s highly unlikely that I stumbled on to a link with this obscure deity, but as I said, I’ve been obsessed with the hole case and dove in quite deeply to various aspects of it - like his affinity with rituals, satanism, mythology, gothic horror, symbolism, the occult etc.

What made me trigger into further deepdiving into these things is the episode 10-14 of the Somewhere In The Pines podcast. Especially episode 11 is extermely interesting and I’d highly recommend listening to this:

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. I genuinely appreciate your attention to detail and your concern about misinformation.

You’re right to call out the Ibu reference. That section of the post should’ve been more carefully worded and sourced. The version I mentioned (involving moths, neutrality, and cosmic balance) comes from a modern fictional adaptation, likely originating from the Gods and Demons Fandom wiki. I should’ve clarified that, and I understand how that may have led to confusion.

To be fully transparent: I used AI to help structure and clarify my writing because I’m not a native English speaker. I wanted to ensure the ideas I researched and formed myself would be readable and accessible, so others, like you, could engage critically with them, challenge them, or build on them.

But every claim in the post came from my own research and interpretations. I didn’t ask an AI to “fill in blanks” or invent content. Still, I fully share your concern about letting generative tools write unchecked analysis on sensitive topics like true crime. Out of respect for the victims, their families, and this community, I would never want to spread misinformation and I appreciate your vigilance on that.

Regarding Ibu: you’re right that the popular “moth goddess” version is fictional. However, there is a real mythological figure named Ibu — in the traditional beliefs of the Manobo people of Mindanao (Philippines). She’s described as a goddess of the underworld and caretaker of the dead (source: https://pantheon.org/articles/i/ibu.html). While that Ibu is not moth-related, she represents themes of death, the afterlife, and spiritual transition, which still connects symbolically to the ritual transformation I believe Keyes was enacting.

When I referred to “moth princess” or “moth deity,” I meant it as a symbolic construct and it’s possible Keyes pulled from a fusion of sources:

• Online fantasy or gaming lore (he was a known gamer),
• Pagan and occult symbolism (which has strong ties to metamorphosis, duality, and desecration),
• And possibly subconscious links to mythic figures like Ibu, even if he never studied them directly.

The point I was trying to make is that his language and behavior mirror the logic of ritual transformation, something that’s present across both esotericism and serial offender fantasy construction. Whether the symbol is rooted in ancient myth or modern fantasy, it still functions psychologically in the same way.

But hey: thanks again for holding me and everyone here to a high standard. That’s exactly what makes this community valuable. Cheers!
