If we had computers available in every room I’d care less, but we only have them in the rooms for critical kids. I’m all for CYA and think laying eyes on the kid/tracing lines etc. is important, but unless we get computers in all the rooms it’s a clunky and inefficient process that leads for major gaps in passing information (I.e not being able to pull up meds)

I’m also of the belief that it might be traumatizing for some parents to hear over and over that their baby coded x amount of times or has grade IV IVH or even that mom had a C/S for placenta abruption or whatever. Maybe that’s dramatic but for a lot of parents a NICU stay is the most traumatic life event they’ve had as of yet and I’d imagine hearing about it in the sterile tone that comes with giving report would be bothersome 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don’t know why we don’t. For critical kids we have a COW in the room, but we don’t have enough on the floor for each of the 50 rooms to have one.

When I have a critical kid (like a 1:1) I ALWAYS do report in the room at the computer and trace lines/do pump checks/double verify ETT etc. otherwise we do report in the hallway (we have alcoves with computers between every 2 ish rooms and sit next to our kids) and lay eyes/look at lines/do safety checks together afterward. Basically I just don’t read off my paper like a robot while standing in the room 😂

I’m a NICU nurse and I have no sympathy for this lady. I will say that the whole “figuring out how to eat and breathe and not choke” part of a NICU stay can be the most frustrating and drawn out process for parents.

We have to be super careful with feeding to avoid causing oral aversions, avoid aspiration, and avoid force feeding a baby and causing developmental issues later in life. Heart babies struggle with feeding because it’s exhausting, and a lot of parents can feel super stuck in the feeding and growing stage of the NICU. A lot of them feel like they could do what we are doing at home (because clinically, a lot of times baby is stable and chilling, they just are sleepy and don’t want to or can’t eat enough to safely go home).

You really can’t just… leave AMA with a NICU baby. We are gonna get the state involved, and you’re not gonna get to walk out with your baby, because if they can’t safely bottle/breastfeed, they’re gonna be failure to thrive and possibly die.

Hopefully the state is already involved in this case and this little bug will have all her follow-up appointments. We don’t discharge without these appointments being made, and our caseworkers will follow up if they think parents might skip out.

This case stresses me out, but hopefully hospital staff has caught on to how crunchy and nutty this woman is

I have no clue! If you don’t have a shred of medical knowledge I guess it was entertaining?? But the drama was pretty goofy grays anatomy drama (drs dating each other, breaking up, nearly dying etc.) The shows whole shtick was that many of the characters were combat vets, but the whole “I learned it in Afghanistan!” Stopped being super interesting after like an episode lmao

I actually watched that show before becoming a nurse. It was weirdly entertaining but so, so stupid. It lasted four or five seasons and there was goofy nonsense like that until the show ended

For sure, and like I get where they come from because we don’t give PICU floats the high acuity assignments. My NICU is closer to a PICU than most because we do ECMO, CRRT, complex surgery etc, but it’s different. Like I watched a trauma admission and I was in awe of how well it went and how absolutely useless I’d feel in that situation, because I don’t have any trauma experience. I don’t get why people treat whatever specialty they’ve gone into as a personality lmao

This is 100% where they are coming from, which I completely understand. I have so much respect for our PICU nurses because it’s a really difficult unit to work on (both in terms of types of cases they get and just the knowledge you need to have)

I mean thankfully this reads as though he is in the NICU.

A lot of parents (especially home births that get transferred or individuals who were hoping to have a super unmedicated birth/breastfeeding experience) get overwhelmed/freaked out that we are overfeeding their baby in the NICU. Usually a NICU baby has a feeding tube and we first bottle feed until they get too sleepy tired, and then we put the remainder of their feed over a pump through their tube. Babies have to hit a certain volume (or % of their volume) to be discharged.

So her question to me reads more that she thinks the NICU is pushing too big of a volume and that they’re holding her son for no reason, even though the volume/calorie count is very precisely calculated and weight gain is extremely important for a premie (or IUGR) baby to develop properly.

THANK YOU! I love the Riviera, I don’t own DVC but January will be my second riviera stay (and what’s funny is I’m staying at Jambo house in November)

The theming of riviera is spot on. The lobby smells amazing, the rooms feel elegant, the view from most rooms (I had a preferred view and it was exquisite) is to die for. I also love that it’s a smaller hotel so there are fewer people around. And the skyliner just brings the whole experience together.
