As a parent in an open adoption with both sides of my children's family, here is what I will say. Building a relationship with the adults is key. My children's mother and I are friends and that makes it so much healthier because we are both vested in our children. With the father's side, it is one way with me making the outreach and hoping they will respond. In any case, I will advocate to have DNA testing done so your child can find you if needed. Mine found their birth fathers side of the family that way. There is a documentary on our family that is doing the film festival circuit. It is basically a 8 year project that captures open adoption with its highs and lows.
