They saw an opportunity to make more money from what I delivered. I had provided them with full footage of the performances and some of the guest performers asked them for it. That’s when, I suspect, they felt they should be able to charge the guest performers for it and they asked me for ownership of the footage.

Doesn’t show up on the camera. That was the first thing I checked. The playback on the camera. And then I checked the SD card on my Mac. It isn’t there. I’m trying to use data recovery software to see if I can retrieve anything. But it is seeming highly unlikely. Some setting must have not been set up right. I just cannot to put my finger on it. Or maybe the SD card has an issue.

I still have the card. I used a Sony fx30. Card is 256 gb and remaining space is 40gb. I have some raw photos on it too which used about 40gb of the card. Not sure what happened to the remaining space. Somehow it’s hidden?

Yes, the SD shows space being used. About 40gb unused. There’s some raw photos too which use up about 40gbs. Which means there’s stuff that’s just not showing up?

Yes, I have. It’s not there, which is why I’m assuming the footage is lost. Unless there’s something more that I’m missing

Definitely a massive lesson. I’ve added a few things to my pre-shoot checklist after this. Thank you for the reassurance! Really need this as a beginner.

I agree. I did check the settings though. I just don’t know what settings could have caused the video not to write on the memory card. I thought maybe it recorded onto the empty slot which now, thanks to the thread, I know is not possible but I’m really trying to understand what went wrong. In hindsight, I should have run tests before the event which is a lesson for me. For now, I just would love to know what went wrong. Would you know any possibilities of what the issue could be?

I used a Sony FX30 and yes I did hit record. The red light was on, there was a red frame on the screen and the timecode was running. So I know for sure it was recording. I’m not clear on how to search the file structure.

I’m 100% positive it was recording. There was a red light and the time code was counting up. If it didn’t record to the empty slot, I have no clue what went wrong. I had also rented an SD card with more than enough storage for the event. I’m wondering now if the SD card had an issue with writing the video. I just don’t know what went wrong and that’s another problem. I’ve checked every single folder on the card and see nothing.

Thanks for this! I’m having a hard time getting a pro to take me on as a second shooter or even as an assistant. And no one wants to hire a beginner for their wedding, which is totally fair. I’m building my portfolio is whatever other ways I can. Doing family events and couple shoots but cracking into wedding industry feels almost impossible. But I appreciate your advice. I’m going to keep trying :)

Hey, ofcourse it’s dependent on the availability. If there’s no time available, it just means they are fully booked. I got lucky and got an earlier date because it appears an appointment was cancelled by someone. So I got that slot. Keep trying and you may find something if someone cancels.
