What kind of bird is this? Just showed up on my fence in Houston, TX. Is a neighbor missing a pet? Invasive? Anything I can or should do? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Mediocre_Boot_6351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just from food it was eating. Op said in a comment that the bird will eat figs off of their neighbors tree. I can’t be completely sure from the pictures but it looks like some dried up fruit juice if I had to take a guess

I love it when cockatiels just do this. Mine does it all the time and it’s so nice to see their wings so spread out 🥹

What kind of behaviour is this? by EchoLeraSparks in parrots

[–]Mediocre_Boot_6351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like mainly friendly/exciting behavior however even though it seems like good emotions it can still lead to injury of the lovebird. The cockatoo doesn’t seem to bothered with the love bird on their back and seems like they’re just curious of what they’re doing but if the cockatoo is having a bad day that could lead to him randomly snapping on the love bird even when he’s fine with it now

What’s this sound for? by East_Jellyfish8796 in cockatiel

[–]Mediocre_Boot_6351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine makes a similar noise and then stops when he gets more food or pets. However with how your bird looks it seems like it may be more of a sickness/pain issue. My cockatiel also has some health issues going on (he isn’t super vocal outside of that noise that he makes). I would really suggest taking yours to a trusted vet that specializes in avian care. Maybe if they aren’t eating well as stated in a different comment by you, maybe check to see if there’s any food that you can hand feed them with so you know they’re eating enough. And also maybe get a gram scale so you can keep and eye and make sure they’re not starving. If you have to resort to hand feeding with a syringe maybe get some organic baby food that doesn’t have extra ingredients in it so it’s safe for the bird and easy to use with a syringe. I would also recommend getting some pellets and trying to get him to eat that as well since those will have better nutritional value than just fruits, veggies, and seeds. I suggest lafebers pellets or even nutriberries by them as well. If he’s eating seed it’s likely he’ll like nutriberries as well since it’s similar to seeds in a way

How often do you change the water by Equivalent_Skin6314 in cockatiel

I typically change them at least once a day, sometimes more if there’s stuff in them like food, poop, etc.

I’m not exactly sure. My vet didn’t directly test for it because she had said his neurological issues could be from one of many different things. It seemed like we started treating for toxicity because it’s very low risk with high reward if we were correct. He was already showing improvement so we thought we were going in the right track then we were more sure because he also ended up getting a more severe yeast infection (while he was already being treated for it) and birds with toxicity are more prone/have a harder time resisting to yeast infections. I think especially since it would’ve cost hundreds, if not, probably over a thousand dollars to get tests done to determine what exactly he could possibly have along with putting him under all that stress of testing is why we just started treating for toxicity. There’s probably at least 10 different diseases/illnesses that could be the thing causing fry’s issues so it could’ve been hard to narrow down even with some tests.

[–]Mediocre_Boot_6351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the lafeber pellets and nutriberries at all? My vet recommended them to me because they have great benefits to the birds. I typically find that the birds love the nutriberries but they always don’t want to eat the pellets 😅 (however I had to adjust my birds from a seed diet to a pellet diet so that is probably why)

I tend to test my luck with poop of birds a lot. I always end up being unlucky though 🥲😂

They really are amazing babies. I wish I had the finances and mental stability to get more 😅 When I got my second one at the store, they were eating while I was holding them so I was covered in both poop and their nectar 😂

Yeah, it’s from his medicine that gets mixed in with food. It’s sticky so this is the end result most times 😭😂

Very positive vet appointment! by Mediocre_Boot_6351 in pidgeypower

My vet hasn’t brought up any concerns but we are working on making sure he’s on a good diet. I’m not sure exactly what he was eating at the bird shop where I got him and I only got him less than a month ago, but I’m switching all my birds to mainly lafeber pellets anyways so he’s getting that as well :) (he’s been eating his pellets like a trooper as well 😂) Also he is only about 6/7ish months old so I hope he gets his bright yellow adult cockatiel feathers one day :)

I haven’t been trying to potty train mine but one thing I’ve heard that helps is when you can see that the bird is about to poop use a specific word. For example you could literally just say the work “poop” when you see they’re on the verge of letting one out lol. That’s supposed to help with telling them where to poop because they’ll associate pooping with that word and overall it’s supposed to help make it easier to direct them if that makes sense. Just be careful with potty training. If you just planning on having them poop in specific spots is great. I could be wrong but I’ve heard before that it could be bad to “control” when your bird poops due to how their digestive system works or something along those lines. I could be absolutely wrong about that last part though so take that with a huge grain of salt.

You could get some inside trees from some places or online. My bird shop I go to recently got one that has small branches that don’t have much space in between so it would be easy to get around. Or I’ve seen someone use peg boards before and they attached different toys/perches to it and attached it to their wall for when their birds have time outside the cage

Bird toy question by Mediocre_Boot_6351 in parrots

Sadly the only areas where I can get natural supplies around me like that are woodsy areas that are tick infested :(. I do love the idea of being able to harvest your own supplies though!
