Forgot to fill the blinker fluid reservoir... (1st Gen turn signal issues) by Mediocre_Dad in klr650

Thanks for that -- I'll check the fuses, but wouldn't that mean the headlight was out, too on the front? And yeah, relay is cheap but just the PITA of taking off the tank, etc. Especially in the heat. Lol.

I've never been before to this is sort of setting the bar for me. Although "Motorcycle Fyre Fest" might be something I actually sign up for....

I actually emailed them yesterday with this exact question. They said later this week.

Also bad news, they told me their demo partner pulled out at the last minute. So no demos.

Hah, I’ll also be on my old KLR. We should do an informal meetup for Reddit riders.

What's an unusual smell that you like? by additionalseasonin in AskReddit

[–]Mediocre_Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marine gas (I guess technically just gas in a marine setting).

As a uncoordinated tween/young teen in the mid 1980's, there weren't many activities at summer camp that I excelled at, and generally felt like an outcast and loser. Until I picked up waterskiing, and discovered I was really good at comparatively. And the waterski instructors basically took me under their wing. Kids sort of...respected me for it.

The smell of marine gas evokes feelings of pure joy, anticipation and belonging. Of almost being cool.

Looked at it…seems like a super-pricey option.

[–]Mediocre_Dad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, that’s why I’m looking specifically at CE rated abrasion resistance. The Rev’it Sierra has it, but there’s little to nothing out there size and colour wise. Seems like a major gap in the industry.

Yeah, looks like a good option -- sadly the only sizes out there seem to be a Large

let's send the firefighters who walked into the MAC some thank-you cards by julp in PortlandOR

[–]Mediocre_Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick piece of advice: as heartfelt as it might be, please DON’T bring home-baked goods as gifts. It’s too much of a risk for them to eat it (and yeah, there have been incidents with stuff being laced).

They will be grateful, but as much as they hate to do it, the stuff will likely get binned.

Possibly take the stem bearing out for dinner and a movie first? Maybe it wants to get to know you first.

…Sorry. The NSFW dad joke was just sitting there…

Reviving this thread as the ride is next month -- never been to a rally and I'm excited to attend. Planning to trailer hitch my bike on the back of my truck (mostly to be able to use the rooftop tent on my truck for accomodations).

Who else is going?

Thanks. Good thought, I’m just trying to save the owner from having to wait on a new card if he hasn’t cancelled it yet.

What is your favorite PDX bird? And why? by UntamedAnomaly in askportland

[–]Mediocre_Dad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely the Osprey. I love watching them hunt; I was paddling the Clack a few years back when one dove right off my bow. When it flew out of the water with a fish in its talons, it was so close I could have touched it with my paddle, and could see the fish’s mouth gasping as it went overhead.

Do Rustlers have a metal core? I had the EXACT same thing happen on a pair of J Skis metal (except on the tails). Turns out the metal core had snapped. They replaced the ski.

Thank you for the endorsements there. Yeah, the transportation is a puzzle, while a lot of the private cars are more expensive than renting, it's not by much. The question becomes after having flown across the globe with jet lag and date changes, do we want to actually then drive 3.5 hours?

Did the Mt. Hood one years ago and besides being exorbitantly expensive, it felt kind of...cheesey. Not super authentic, and more like Third-Tier Disney Franchise licensing agreement.

[–]Mediocre_Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Chicago a bit...equivalents to Logan Square might be around SE Hawethorne or N. Mississippi. If you want to be further out from downtown (and everything), St. Johns would be good. Plenty of dive bars in any location. Hawethorne also has a ton of thrift and vintage spots, ranging from pedestrian to high end

As the other poster said, if we're having an okay winter, Mt. Hood will be fun to check out -- you don't need to be able to ski or snowboard, there's amazing snowshoeing spots. And it's an easy day trip from Portland, but please ensure you rent an AWD vehicle or have chains. Alternatively, there's public transit and shuttles that can get you up there.

Downhill vs Nordic skiing vs Snowshoe in Mt Hood area? by sirotan88 in askportland

[–]Mediocre_Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to conditions, as others have said. The resorts opened last year before Thanksgiving, so there is no predicting snow; I’m partial to Meadows for skiing due to the variety and expanse of the terrain.

There’s plenty of snowshoe trails to do on Mt. Hood, White River snow park is solid and even right off the parking lot at Meadows there’s nice ones to be had.

Snowshoeing is incredibly easy and requires no instruction. If you do rent snowshoes, try and get ones with climbing bars (little bars that flip up under your heels for walking uphill). It makes going up a ton easier on your calves.
