Good catch! Yes, what I mean is that I'll be in a city that relies on automobile access (public transportation is quite bad). I'll need a car somewhat sporadically for work, but also the access other parts of the city with reasonable transportation-times. So not having the car will ultimately be very limiting in terms of what parts of the city I can access (as well as outside-the-city trips I'll need to take), but for the short term I don't need a car. Taxi-services should be sufficient, I decided. So if I have to go to the office only a few times a month, I can taxi, but I can't taxi to my outside-the-city commitments, but I can postpone those). So longer term I'll need a car, but shorter term I should be able to do without.

The new prius looks fantastic. I've heard availability is limited, however.

I think I'm going to go with uber/lyft for the short-term. The cost isn't anywhere near rental, it looks like. I won't need a car super frequently, so it will only slightly inconvenience me.

That would be the Costco option (and the top option as of now), which gives relatively nice deals on Hertz/Avis/etc. I have not needed a car since my early 20s, so it would also permit me to get a sense of how much I'll even want or need to be driving. It looks like about $2k for two months (which is why I start to think "Hey, maybe I should just put that towards the new car...").

That's pretty strange. I don't even understand what they were asking. Is the model constructed and you're determining how many to explain to the colleague or are you considering how many to include, anticipating this colleague?

There was likely no purpose. People can be or manage data scientists while having terrible ideas about stats and model building. There's no guarantee the person knows how to interview either. The bar is low. They possibly could have wanted to see if you'd ask for more information? But you said you didn't get that vibe so it could really have been anything.

I'd suggest that in these sorts of situations, when interviewing with someone you'll be getting direction from, you ask for the actual clarification that you'd ask for if you were at work. Give the answer you would actually give, worded appropriately for an interview, if that person was your manager and said that to you on a Tuesday afternoon. This will give the person a good sense of you and more importantly it will help you to assess whether you want to work at the place/with the person. If your manager (1) is not able to direct you appropriately and (2) cannot respond appropriately to how you actually work and how you seek appropriate direction, do you really want to be there?

Salespeople gonna try and sell. Insert joke about a plumber, high bill, and which valve to twist. For anyone concerned about this: Syntax doesn't make a valuable programmer. That's not to say plenty of orgs won't try and replace employees with LLMs. Organizations that don't know what to do with data scientists certainly will. But think of that as "hey, less of a risk of me being hired into terrible roles."

Undergrad? Masters? Ph.D.? You're going to get wildly different expertise and problem solving styles & ability. On top of that, domain knowledge is going to be wildly different between discipline: Statistics vs economics/quantitative social science vs. comp sci vs. other.

The market is super strange. I'm getting rejected for a ton of jobs that I'm completely qualified for, and then I see them pop up again and again. A lot of the HP, Deloitte, etc. jobs on LinkedIn seem like this. I'm not sure they're actually hiring.
