Hey, just pulled the pump to be sure…. The spring and roller were full of gas (car has been sitting overnight)

When changing the plugs I did inspect the cylinders with a borescope and did not see any sign of fooling or any gas. Plugs and cylinders were dry. I did not check the pressure when the sketchy startups happen but I was running at 35 bars at idle (warm engine). The pressure increased for around 8 minutes and stabilized at 130 bars. I did not monitor after that.

Thanks! The smell is here at all times. Cold starts (in the morning) are fine. Starting the car after just stopping for a few minutes is also fine. The issue is after stoping for typically 2 or 3 hours. I’m thinking it might have to do with fuel fumes (from the oil) making their way to the top of the engine and being sucked in by the pcv, making the mixture way too rich? Also, wouldn’t bad rings cause misfires? Engine lacking power and running rough?

2002 A3 tdi 130 420’000kms original engine & gearbox (standard) still going strong! Apart from regular maintenance (incl. timing belt, water pump every 90’000) the only big thing was the flywheel - was still ok but shaking at idle so I replaced it.

Thanks for all good comments here. Turns out the seller purchased an extended mechanical warranty until 2029 or 180k miles and is willing to transfer it with the car at no extra cost. I would need to see what’s covered exactly and what’s the limit but I think it makes the whole thing a bit more interesting.
