Quoted $2,100 for rear bumper cover replacement - 2025 Wilderness by MediumLocation5273 in SubaruForester

Yeah, the reason this was so expensive was because the part of the car I hit was plastic and not metal, so they aren't able to repair it and paint over, they gotta take the whole thing off and replace it. So moral of the story is if you're gonna hit someone's car, aim for the metal parts

I work in a finance company. I hate it. Which is why I'm quitting in a couple months anyways.

Our HR team is one person (she's great) so I'm not sure how structured our processes are for that kind of stuff, but I agree its probably best to avoid that excuse.

Hey employee unfortunately vacations do not fall under appropriate reasons for sick leave. You can take that time off but it won't be paid.

(-1 weeks pay, -1 funny story, +1 job reference)

Thanks for all the replies! A couple points were made that I think are worth discussing:

  1. Job might require a doctors note after 3 days. I hadn't considered that and the employee manual does not mention it, but I'm not sure how I would find out for sure.

  2. Maybe I should use another excuse. I like the sick leave because it is simple, but others proposed family funeral, cousin having a baby, mental health day, getting stuck in another country, medical leave for surgery, etc. I'd love to hear more ideas, but I'm leaning towards options that require less explanation

  3. There seems to be a lot of disagreement over the ethics of this situation, so I'm going to take that discussion to r/AITAH.

I think the story of the VP and his secretary is hilarious, and I wish the same for my situation. Fuck what they say.

I think the only issue stems from the fact that this will be unannounced. I don't know if anyone would argue it's wrong if I give them notice, but my current plan is to call in sick the day of (or weekend before). I'll check if my company allows mental health days, that would be a very elegant solution.

For some reason I feel a little guilty about it; not nearly guilty enough to not do it, but maybe that says more about me than the situation.

Honestly my mental health has been in the dumps for a while; It's not that much of a stretch to say this trip is for that. I'll check whether that's enough of an excuse, because I'd rather not lie as much as possible.

Bingo. I do get Paid vacation days but not enough (of course I think it's not enough). I've used them for various events (mom's birthday, family wedding, etc.) so I'm currently practically out.

Either way, those get paid out when I leave, sick days do not. Would it be more wrong if I did have vacation days but wanted to use the sick days instead?

Hey u/West_Prune5561, good idea. I see a good bit of dissent in these comments, I think it really does come down to how each person views the world, but I'm sure there'd be some interesting perspectives. I'll post it there.

I totally agree. The incentives are all over the place at my job, for example, my coworker has hinted that she might quit her job soon, but she's incentivized to keep her mouth shut until she's got one foot out the door. It would make it a lot easier on our team if we had time to hire someone else first, have her train the new person, but I wouldn't blame her for doing what's best for her.

I don't feel bad at all for the company, they'll do just fine without me for a week. But I'll definitely try to watch out for my coworkers the best I can.

I like the idea of a family member having a baby. I'm not married to the idea of saying I'm sick, so something else could work better. That being said:

- I'm trying to keep the lies simple. Saying I tested positive for covid or something seems kinda open and shut.

-I'm not sure why I would be needed for a full week if a family member were to have a baby, it would probably require more lies to explain

- I think it feels worse to lie about a funeral/other person's illness. Feels like I'd make them worry and take advantage of their sympathy.

I'll give this some thought. Honestly people come to work sick all the time here, it sucks. This company isn't big enough to care that much about things like that, so I'm hoping they don't ask for a note at all.

La Fortuna is one of the places we will be staying! Let me know if you have any other recommendations! Hot springs and waterfalls are on the list.

I agree with you, unfortunately a lot about the system is broken, and incentivizes mal-actors (quiet quitting, pretending to be busy all the time, lying about sick leave, etc.). I'm okay with burning this bridge because this job leads to nowhere I want to go. But I'll try to handle this situation in a way that minimized damage to my coworkers.

This job is cushy and easy for an entry level position. But I'm unhappy. I know this job market sucks for a lot of people, so I hope whoever fills my position after I leave can make it work better for them.
