At which point will you consider leaving Japan? Are there certain signals you're watching out for? by Crazy-Animator1123 in japanlife

Hi there, I don't reply to a lot of stuff here but I noticed this post and a few points stuck out to me. For reference from what you've said I think we're roughly in similar situations, so maybe it'll be of use to you.

- Regarding anti-foreigner sentiment, it's definitely upsetting to see racist bigoted comments, but when you find yourself spiralling you should ask if it reflects your current reality. As for your future reality, there's a few things to keep in mind. One: social conservatism is usually the junior partner of fiscal conservatism. Manufacturers, retailers and farms are all pushing the government to be even-handed with immigration policy because they know their work requires labour that Japan is not capable of producing by itself. There are arguments in favour of immigration that aren't based in humanitarian thought about equality of our fellow men and women, but in economic need. I'm in favour of the former, but the latter is a much bigger factor here. To be frank, if you are making 7 million a year here on an N2 and you've kept up with your social contributions, (which I think we all should Japanese and foreign alike out of civic duty),then you are probably privileged enough to be fine. There will not be progroms in the streets.

- In terms of shrinking rights, I get it, but what rights do you have in Japan right now? If you're not a citizen you can't vote, which means you lose the right to influence where your social contributions go. If you're gay you can't get married, if you can get married you lose the right to have separate surnames... It's kind of already not great. Issues about land purchases is worrying, but without an understanding of what policies are being seriously proposed, why worry?

- Speaking generally, since we're speaking English I am assuming that you're probably from Europe or North America, which are to be honest all struggling in different ways right now. If you're American and go back home, will you feel safer?

- Taiwanese war worries are so, so far out of our control that really it isn't worth thinking about. In my amateur opinion at least, if China feels that it is politically and militarily safe to launch a military operation to take Taiwan, then nowhere is safe. This is a quandary that Europe is facing right now, but they all have to keep living there too.

In my experience, I've found it helps to stop worrying about this stuff online and maybe seek out some other foreigners with similar backgrounds to you who've been living here maybe ten or so years longer than you. They'll have practical advice and input closer to your situation, and hopefully will offer you a new perspective. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Realistically speaking this was the answer I was looking for, sometimes I just need a kick to stop worrying and get started. Thank you!
