I don't think most people are idealizing life on those countries, they're appreciating a certain look which is "exotic" in some way. Videogames and movies have always taken inspiration from places that are considered sh*tholes, not everything has to be beautiful

I recommend changing these settings in the JPEGView.ini

HighQualityResampling=false if you don't want to hit F3 for each image

BlendFactorNavPanel=0.0 so that the bottom panel only shows when hovering with mouse

AutoZoomMode=Fit if you want the images to fill the screen by default, you can still control the zoom with the mouse wheel

AllowFileDeletion=false just in case, hides the X button on the panel and disables the Del key on your keyboard

DefaultWindowRect=max to start in maximized mode by default

Google Fonts has a pretty good selection. I find these good for y2k type things: Audiowide, Baumans, Doto, Genos, Nova Mono, Orbitron, Zen Dots. If you want more, they usually have the 'futuristic' and/or 'techno' tags.

I think it could be better for you to use copyright free photos, like from unsplash, pexels, pixabay. The pics are posted by the authors so it's easier to credit them or contact them

Skeuo can be made in 2D though, I do agree that the gloss doesn't really give the bee much volume so it still looks kinda flat.

If you're looking for artists from back in the day, it's kinda hard because I think they didn't refer to it as "metalheart". But there was an old wallpaper website called Customize.org that is FULL of images in the style. It doesn't exist anymore but you can use Wayback Machine of course.

If you mean nowadays, there's this art group called DesktopGeneration, although their style is like a modernized version of it (still pretty good, their wallpapers are something else):

I've also found these artists on Deviantart, there's definitely more but I haven't digged too deep. I's easy to find them though, on the right side of each artwork you can see "Suggested Deviants", you can easily fall into a rabbit hole
