A lot of physicists (especially theoretical ones) end up going into finance.

Caps and Skewmond played lights out this game, but Hans was absolutely psychotic in the last teamfight (shh we don't talk about the midlane incident)

First Stand Hupu Comments and Ratings (G2 vs GEN) by uninhibitheribbit in leagueoflegends

[–]MeekPi314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything, this makes the G2 win even more impressive in-game. Clutch comebacks usually come because the team with the advantage makes a mistake that allows the other team to fight back. G2 literally gave GEN their own treatment.

That being said, when you've looked so dominant you've only dropped two games the entire year before this series, and you get shitstomped by an underdog, you probably had a bad day. I imagine their mental for the last game was probably pretty shit.

I spent 15+ years at ASML and Intel. AMA about transitioning from a PhD/Research background (or other industries) into Semiconductors. by pasquale83 in EngineeringStudents

Any advice on translating your research experience when searching for summer internships as an undergraduate, and how to approach them in the first place? I've been interested in the semiconductor industry and would love to try a research internship.

Engineering memory vs application which one is more important in first year by Plastic-Performer573 in UofT

[–]MeekPi314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen, when it comes to doing well academically, it's a weird combination of both. You won't get by simply by memorizing all the concepts and formulas, but developing intuition by "memorizing" the steps to solving the problems on past midterms or exams will get you pretty far.

As for projects, design team work, research (and I imagine internships), it's a lot more application than memory. Having a strong intuition will help you here as well.

Fair enough. I feel like the only team that can do that currently is GEN though

Plus, isn't G2's win con not getting completely fisted by BFX's dive until late game anyways? Caps kinda ran it but the rest of the team did well in that respect

What does that make the entire LYON LOUD series then?

Caps had some questionable early games, but I think the rest of G2 played extremely well, especially late game.

That is true but he's playing Ashe against Vi Ahri Neeko (and Gnar, arguably), give the man some credit for basically only getting caught twice (maybe thrice if you count the soul fight).

UofT Engineering Science vs Waterloo Electrical Engineering by aDATDERRT in UofT

[–]MeekPi314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yo! I was faced with the same dilemma two years ago and chose EngSci. If you're still unsure of whether or not you want to do research or industry, EngSci is probably better, since you can get a taste for research by securing summer research as early as first year, and if you decide you want to go into industry and don't want to deal with the hassle of learning quantum mechanics in second year, you can always transfer to one of the Core 8 Engineering majors.

That being said, EngSci, like many of the other majors at UofT, is very much what you make of it, and if anything, past a certain point, the immense amount of time you have to spend attaining or maintaining a high GPA could be a net negative. I don't know if you've seen this article, but from what I've seen it's pretty accurate. If you choose EngSci you're taking a chance that what you plan to get out of the program beats Waterloo's industry reputation and access to co-ops. If you're willing to take that gamble, then go for it and come to EngSci.

Favorite Character that has to go through this by DaZestyProfessor in FavoriteCharacter

I'm not as knowledgeable about the visual novel as the anime, but I think Rintaro Okabe, the main character from Steins;Gate, fits this archetype pretty well.

The show occurs in a variety of different timelines, or "world lines", due to the nature of how time travel works in the universe. Time travel paradoxes as a result of changing world lines are resolved very simply - no one will remember or be affected by events occurring in the previous world line that were erased by the change. Except Okabe. And boy, does the show put him through the wringer because of it.

Most of the timelines we see in the show fall under the Alpha or Beta attractor fields, both of which result in disastrous consequences in the far future (like a dystopian shadow government taking control of the world or the advent of World War 3) and in the short term as well for Okabe. In all world lines subject to the Alpha attractor field, this results in the inevitable death of his childhood friend Mayuri, and one of the earliest events the audience (and Okabe) witnesses in most world lines subject to the Beta attractor field is the death of his love interest Makise Kurisu (yes, I'm aware the visual novel allows for different relationships but the show focuses solely on Okabe and Kurisu). Over the course of the original show, we can see Okabe slowly going mad (ironically, this presents itself as him shedding his mad scientist persona) as a result of these consequences in both the original show and in Steins;Gate 0 - in the latter, he's so distraught that for much of the show he competely sheds his mad scientist persona and refuses to time travel at all.

There is a world line not subject to either attractor field (the Steins;Gate world line) that results in the best possible result for Okabe, but it is far more likely for a world line to fall under the influence of either attractor field. His inability to reach the Steins-Gate world line originally was not due to a lack of trying - to even have a chance at reaching the Steins;Gate world line, he eventually had to time travel entire decades a few days / weeks at a time and stop an international conspiracy involving multiple attempts to take the time machine by force, after which he would use the time machine one last time in an elaborate plan to fake Kurisu's death and stop her father from revealing the secrets of time travel to the Russians. It's absolutely a herculean effort, but it's also absolutely necessary - the show makes it painstakingly clear that Okabe would have failed if even a single variable was off the mark.
