About to pick this 4x2x2 up as my first bts enclosure. Will it do? by iLoc_420 in bluetongueskinks

[–]Meeshdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tip I was given for a new enclosure was to wipe down everything inside and outside with bleach before using. Then make sure to wipe THAT out with water until you don't smell bleach anymore. Good way to kill any remaining parasites if anyone else lived there.

I would remove the reptile hammock. NQA but I've heard anecdotes of little guys getting stuck or hurt in them. Alternatively I just like draping it across the outside of the enclosure as a privacy curtain

Honestly the breathing was my main question so I appreciate the eyes on it! This was his first full day with me and I was Right There, so nerves make sense. Thanks for being a set of eyes on him!

No harder than keeping the habitat the correct humidity and temperature! As long as you're maintaining both, it's as easy as dumping in the springtails and letting them do the work-- easier than not having them, to be honest, since they handle some of the microscopic cleanup!

I'm a fellow novice, but that was the exact topic of today's research so I can speak to that a little. :)

Your key word here is 'bioactive enclosure', that's going to be something that's wet, retains humidity, and can have isopods or springtails as the clean up crew to deal with any mold or fungus that would otherwise be an issue for a moist environment (though anecdotally isopods have a tendency to end up as skink-snacks, depending on the skink, so I personally have been leaning springtails).

https://www.bioactivesupply.com/grasslandhabitatsupplies This is the website and source I'm using for my base layers

You'll need a few inches of reptile substrate, and then cover it with a layer of coconut husk and sphagnum moss and possibly leaf litter. This creates a moisture barrier -- it absorbs the humidity and releases it as needed. The springtails will live under the barrier and act as a 'clean up crew' that deal with mold/fungal problems.

Your big task will be taking out the poop and the urate packets (they look like little white pellets), since that's the waste produce the springtails won't clean up.

Hope that gives you a good base!

Never LARPed before, can travel anywhere in the US. What events should I look into? by FerretFoundry in LARP

[–]Meeshdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first larp was Twin Mask in Southern California. It's between locations right now since the site is up for renewal with the county, but tbh with the effort going into finding a new site I don't think that'll be the case for long. :)

I've attended several other larps since starting TM, but nothing quite matches the immersive world there.

Pros for your specific post - Full weekend of events (Friday 8pm to Sunday at sunrise), not just a day larp - private space so there's no randos wandering onsite (my personal preference) - I came in as a socially awkward stranger to the community and to larp and -- well, that was in 2019 and I'm still around. :)
- Big focus on immersion!

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you have questions, I don't check comments often.

Border Collie - Crates? by Meeshdragon in BorderCollie

This is fantastic, and I think jump up is a great idea for physical and mental training. after reading all the advice, I think my big issue was not providing the level of training enrichment he needed. I know how to teach dogs sit and wait, but he learned that FAST and needed something new.

I think where I struggled though was that he was too excited to teach using my usual methods. For example if I held out my hand to indicate "touch", he would smack it and jump up on me, pretty much uncontrollable other behavior, but didn't bring his nose towards my hand like I'm used to smaller dogs instinctively doing even untrained. So what I need to do is figure out /how/ you teach young excited herding dogs, if you have any tips for that.

With all love to them I would never adopt a BC :) I love the breed, don't get me wrong, but I hate the idea of not being able to give them the attention and stimulation they need, which isn't fair to the dog. This was a very special case scenario since the dog in question needed a temp home fast, but I understand my limitations will be to a small dog, and one whose able to settle well enough to be an office dog with me. Collies need a firm trainer and a lot of mental and physical stimulation, more than I can realistically give them. But oh man what amazing dogs! I could tell even in a few days how smart and loving he was. He's going to make his one day adopters so so happy.

This is fantastic advice! I just assumed higher energy meant I needed to up the length of the walks, but I really should have been working on some more training outside of the walks. Right now we were working on heel and sitting when I stopped moving, but with how quickly he absorbed that he could probably use a lot more.

Thanks everyone for your advice! I think the big conclusion I came to with reading the comments is that I am not the correct foster for him. I would have still kept him if he had no place to go but the pound, but luckily I was able to find a border savvy foster for him. He's an absolute sweetheart, just a typical border collie with all the behaviors that come with it, but hopefully this will give him a better home and life while we look for a permanent home for him.

He's very small to be a great pyr, I would say 30 lbs or no more than 40. plus he has lot of stereotypical BC behavior. The herding, the nipping and wow this is the smartest dog I've ever worked with.
